Rossi 92: Scope mounts?

Gentlemen,

I have been considering one of these in .357 Mag. as a less expensive, shorter and lighter alternative to the stainless Marlin lever. They seem like dandy little rifles and actually come in the 16" barrel length that Marlin seems to eschew.

The rifle will need a scope though as i am unable to see the open sights well enough for hunting. I know the top-eject is not ideal for this and am prepared to live with a scout mount, since I have a 2x Leupold LER scope just lying around collecting dust anyway.

Does anyone know of a mount I could obtain? I have searched forums and Google to no avail. Rumor has it that Legacy/Puma is no longer selling theirs. And the B-Square side mount got really bad reviews on Midway's site - and of course, is not a scout mount. It'd be a shame if I had to forego this nice gun because no one makes what I require.

XS sight systems makes the only lever-action scout mounts I am aware of.

They have one for the Winchester 94 Angle Eject, but none for the standard 94 or 92.

This is because there needs to be drilled & tapped scope mount holes in the front receiver ring to hold the scout mount down.

A 92 is a 92, be it a Winchester or Rossi, and you get what you got.
Top ejection, no possible way to top mount a scope, so no drilled & tapped receiver.

I don't know how you would do it, short of finding one of the Legacy/Puma barrel mounts on eBay or something.

If your concern is only with being able to see, I have used aperture sights with astigmatism, and they work well. These should work: http://www.skinnersights.com/barrel_mount_6.html

Still, your options with a Marlin are better, for scopes or aperture sights. That nice flat closed receiver top and simpler mechanism, let you mount whatever, wherever, including a long Picatinny rail from the rear of the receiver to the middle of the barrel.

Thanks everyone for responding. I didn't think there was a way to make my own Rossi scout but I thought just for the heck of it I'd check here. I will probably just wait and get the cheaper blued Marlin, although they are scarce as hen's teeth.

I've got the same gun - the Rossi/EMF .357 levergun with a 16" bbl. HATE the stock sights. Shoots consistently high, and to the right. Anyway, I found a gunsmith out here in San Diego who is putting a scout rail on for me. Needs to be drilled and tapped, of course, but now I'm shopping. Haven't decided if I want a Red Dot, or an actual scout scope. Both Burris and Leupold make decent scout scopes. Whatever I get, I want to keep it low-profile.

Have you thought about the Burris FastFire II? It's one of those mini red dots, though I don't know how well it would do placed so far from the eye on a scoout rail.

I've got a Williams FP 94 rear peep sight on a Puma 92 (which is actually "made for" the Marlin 1894 and 1895 IIRC).

But it required a drill & tap for 2 screws on the left side of the receiver. It comes up and "hovers" over the receiver just in front of the safety, but far enough back to allow ejection. As for scopes, I dunno.

FWIW, I also replaced the stock front sight with a brass bead sight - may have been Marbles brand; cannot remember. But it's a durable yet visible front.

I agree with Dr. THW about going with a peep sight. The range of a pistol caliber rifle should be kept within it's limits for hunting. And a .357 out of a rifle should be good to about 150 yards which isn't too far, and a peep would be a good choice for that distance. I don't know how bad your eyes are, and haven't had to worry about mine yet, but I have heard folks say that they can't shoot standard leaf sights but can shoot using a peep.

Here is my 20" Puma .44 Mag set up with Marbles sights and a Marbles Tang:

1/16" Gold bead front:

Folding rear leaf (have not used, but did co-witness with the tang sight once the rifle was sighted in with the tang sight)

And the Tang Sight. If you get a 20" or longer Puma, the tang will already be drilled and tapped for a sight, and you just need to then order the screw set from somewhere like Brownells or Midway. The Marbles standard tang sight comes with three different sized apertures included. You can also remove the apertures to use it as a ghost ring sight.

My only concern with the tang sight is how it feels to hold the gun. Do you find that it gets in the way, or do you really not notice it?

(I'll probably get one if people say they don't notice it when they shoot the gun.)

I was actually going to limit it more to 100 yds.

The Marbles tang sight looks extremely interesting, thank you for the pics. I might have to consider this instead of a scope.

If you are buying a new Rossi, mine has pretapped holes for mounting a scope located under the rear sight.

I removed my Puma's factory rear sight when I mounted the Marbles tang sight. Underneath are four neat tapped holes. I'd like to mount a Burris 1 1/2X scout scope on the barrel if I could find a scout mount that would fit.

Personally I don't have any issue with the tang mount getting in the way. My thumb wraps right over the portion where the rear mounting screw is. I don't think it hinders me in any way. Now when it is folded down I just wrap my thumb around the shaft of the sight and again I don't think it hinders me. But I got the tang sight as my primary sighting system so it is usually in the upright position. The folding rear leaf I consider a backup sight just in case something were to happen to the tang sight.

Oh also, if you make an account on Brownells, set your account up as a gunsmith with no on-hand stock. You get a decent discount on any parts you buy. Instead of that $132 price I only paid $89 for the tang sight.

Yep four holes are there on the carbines. Steve Young (Nate Kiowa Jones) of Steve's Guns made a mount for a Burris Fast Fire I think it was, that looked pretty sharp on a 16" carbine. You might shoot hime an email for details on the process he used. He freqints Paco Kelly's Lever Guns forum.

Take a look http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ItemDetail.aspx?sku=80097 I plan on using the base to atch a FastFire II (waterproof) w/a weaver mount ~ or perhaps a bushnell trophy scope. Guess I'll try both and see which I like.
