I am looking at the Lever Scout mount for my Marlin 1894 and was wondering if a pistol scope would work. I was looking at a Bushnell Trophy XLT 6x32. The specs I found show 20" of eye relief. If that too much? Some of the scopes marketed as scout rifle scopes show they have 9". Any help would be appreciated.

20" eye relief is way to much. I tried A weaver 1-4x20 pistol scope on my Marlin 1895 GS. It worked but not well. I now have A leupold Scout on the 1895 and A leatherwood Scout 2-7 on A 336. They both work very well. The leupold is pushing $300. and the Leatherwood anout $120. So far I realy like the leatherwood. Love the Leupold.

I have a Leupold M8 2x EER pistol scope on my Marlin 1894P .44 Mag and it is just about as perfect as you could get.

IMO: A 6x is WAY too much power for a scout scope, and especially one on a pistol caliber carbine.

You want no more then 3x or so for a wide field of view and an undistorted slightly magnified "spot" in the middle of your view.

Too much power and you will be looking around it all the time trying to see whats going on instead of looking through it.

Do you have a picute of the Leaterwood setup?

I would love a Leupold, but this is a budget build so to speak.

I went with rc's recommendation for the m8. I got it off gunbroker or ebay for 150 shipped, in minty condition. I had to mount it all the way forward on the xs rail, and adjust the objective to change the eye relief, but it worked. my buddy bought a 2.5 or 3x burris scout scope, and I liked it a little better, but it cost 2x as much.

With the scout setup, my accuracy went way up, but my enjoyment went down a little. I found myself spending more time on a sandbag and less offhand. And it just messed with the lines and balance of the gun for me, so I sold it and bought a peep.

The leatherwood on my 336 shorty. Only had it on for A few weeks. I like it very well. My only complaint is the adjustments feel A little clunky(for lack of A better word) but seem to work well.

The higher powers are too much for general use but are nice at the range.

When choosing A scout scope look not only at eye relief which is considered intermediat IER, not extended EER, but at field of vieu. The leupold Has 22' the leatherwood has 18' at 2x. at 100yds.
the problems I had with the weaver pistol scope was eye relief was just A bit to long, and the field of vieu was too small. Just was not comfortable or quick.

That Leatherwood is the same scope (and mount) I have on my 45/70. Works great, no issue with point of impact changes, loosening, anything really. Can't beat it for the price, $120 bucks at Midway.....

I have an 1895 with the Wild West Scout scope system. Its a great system and worth checking out. I also have one of their large loop levers and a few other things frm them. Nothing but good things to say about them and their products.

my bad on the vortex. I should have read the specs and not the the "scout" in the title.

I do wonder if the eye relief could be adjusted like on the leupold m8 pistol scope I had. They look to be set up the same way with the ocular and the lock ring. It might be worth a call to vortex. I've called them a few times before, nice people and short wait times.
