I was at my local gun shop yesterday because he got a batch of Rossi M92s in 357 in. The trouble is that instead of the traditional dove tail rear sight they have a weaver rail held on with four screws.

I contacted Williams and they do not have a rear sight that would work. I would like to keep the gun in traditional configuration and not interested in putting an optical sight on it. Any suggestions?

Did the rifles also have a cheek rest? If so, you are going to have to plug the holes and do other work to make that look good. Unless the price is very good I would wait for a configuration more to your liking.

I've played around with a .454 version that is set up with a scope rail. It wound up with a Leupold Deltapoint. Probably not your thing.

If you do get one, my first recommendation would be this: http://store.stevesgunz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=22&products_id=5

My second would be this: http://store.stevesgunz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=22&products_id=51(probably available for less from Midway) but it will require drilling/tapping on a round barrel Rossi.

Do you have a picture of the Rossi with a rail instead of a rear sight? I do t see one on their website.

Ed, that first sight you linked looks identical to the Skinner lopro I have. And the skinner is about 20 bucks cheaper.

Looks are misleading. :) The skinner lopro is not as similar as you think. Specifically, the one I pointed out replaces the tacked-on safety on a Rossi/LSI/Puma top-ejecting 1892. Skinner mounts forward in the dovetail.

Here's a Rossi with the rail:

The ones I have handled had the cheek piece but no saddle ring. They probably also sell some with the rail and a big loop lever.

The cheek piece is lame, and they used oversized screws to mount the thing, so removing it would mean plugging with dowels and refinishing. One of those "I'd pay more to not have it" features.

crazy looking rifle. couple options come to mind: if you take the rail off, is there a dovetail there? if so, any number of universal dovetail rear sights would probably fit. or you could use the skinner barrel mounted peep as seen on this rossi here http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/skinner-sights/66645-skinner-barrel-peep-stainless-rossi-92-a.html

Ed, from my cursory research it looks like you can make a lopro fit a rossi, but it take a little fitting. It also looks like skinner makes the modified lopro for stevesgunz, which is probably why they look identical. Also, the lopro is not as cheap as I remember it. :)

Either way, to the OP, I'd pass on it and hold out for what you want.

There is a dovetail, at least there was under the rail I took off.

As far as lo pro..if you want to mount a lo pro the way the steve's sight mounts, you will need to drill and tap a plug to go into the safety. At that point IMO just drill and tap the tang for a Marples. If you don't want to be drilling and tapping, the options are steve's in the bolt or a lo pro in the dovetail (8-10" forward of the Steve's). I prefer the peep nearer my eye so the steve's sight is the cheapest/least work option. :)

This is an old picture, but here are the M92s I am most familiar with:

Both are 20" .454 casull. The stainless now has a bolt-mounted peep.

I think the .357 is the most common of these guns. As such, you can find another if you wait.
