In a thread on the Handloading and Reloading forum, rcmodel had a great procedure, seconded by Walkalong, for removing the .38 special carbon ring from .38/.357 revolver cylinders. I tried it and it works great! My problem is, I can’t just chuck up a .40 caliber bore brush in a drill motor and clean the chamber in my lever action. Any suggestions on an easy and effective way to remove .38 spec. carbon ring in a .38/.357 rifle?

1) Swab some KROIL in there and let it "creep" overnight
2) Chamber an EMPTY .357 case with the mouth just slightly opened
(it will scrape most of the ring off)
3) Run a Lewis lead remover through it
4) Clean with brush and patch as usual.

Repeat until clean.

Get a copper chore boy. Make sure it is pure copper because some are copper plated. Take some strands and wrap them around a brush and that will get it all out. My Lewis lead remover I've not touched in years. The Chore Boy works better. I believe I learned about it on this forum as a matter of fact.

Do it from the muzzle. Put some bushings around the cleaning rod so you dont damage the rifling or muzzle and drill away!

From the muzzle will work but you'll want to extend the rod without brush down to the open action then screw the brush in place. Pull it back into the chamber with the rod and drill and chew out the deposits. Then extend it out into the chamber again and unscrew the brush from the rod before drawing it back out the muzzle.
