Rossi or Henry

Well I am doing a 90 degree turn here, I prefer to buy authentic levers e.g. Win 94 in 30-30.

I am now considering a lever in 44-40; whilst a 45 colt is an authentic 19th century cartridge its not an authentic lever caliber! (There is always another authentic 45 cal :) maybe another time).

If I choose to go this route however the option for both a Rossi and a Henry are out, so is Marlin QC again. Leaving me with three options:

1. Try to find a good example of an original Winchester 1892; the cheapest option for a well used example but its going to cost a lot for an excellent one, they stop making them 70 years ago!

How good can a 100 year old lever action rifle be?

My Carl Gustav turned a 100 this year and it in very good condition; no offense intended, but a 1892 action is no where near as strong as a Swedish Mauser and I doubt the barrel would have been forged to the same standard.

2. Buy a new Miroku (Winchester) 1892, best I can get it for is $1420.

3. Buy a Uberti reproduction Winchester 1873, best I can get it for is $1450.

Option 3 seems a bit moot now Japchester are making the 1892 again, however the 1873 is the original 44-40 lever; how good is the Uberti reproduction of the gun that won the west?

Turnbull builds on the Italian made '73 and '92 guns, they might be an option.

I'm not sure why the Rossi is out because they are available in .44WCF.

The Uberti 1873's and 1866's are excellent. I believe better made than their handguns. Mine is a 24" Deluxe Sporting Rifle .38WCF and shoots every load I've tried in it into 1"@50yds.

The late model Winchester 1892's are beautifully made but have a rebounding hammer action and tang safety. You can always buy one from Turnbull, which is completely refinished, the safety removed and the action modified to a traditional half cock.
