Rossi R92 .357 Magnum - A Ton of Fun

My particular model Rossi came with a scope mount, but they’re also available from the mold people NOE, link below.

A Weaver 4X scout scope helps these old eyes enormously, also have Rossi tang sight, no longer produced, as backup. Round barrel Rossi’s, with the exception of the .454, are drilled and tapped from the factory, under the rear sight.
Thanks for sharing - I've been looking for a rail to add a nice scout scope at some point.

I added this rail to my 16" .357 so I could put a red dot on it. Those old buckhorns don't work as well as they used to. :) Peep sight and rail. I zero'd the peep sight first then added the red dot.
I don't think the rail is long enough for a scout scope.

Does anyone have opinions on saddle rings? Have one on hand but haven't added it yet. Would be nice to attach a single-point sling to, but I'm concerned about finish wear from the ring on the receiver.

I had the same concern you did, that the ring itself might scratch the blued finish of the receiver, every time you moved the gun. So I took a length of black 550 Paracord that I had leftover from a previous job I did ( wrapping the metal strut of the folding stock on my AK)., so I did the same thing with the saddle ring.. Looks good and does the job of protecting the metal on that side of the gun.

I have a 357 R92 carbine, really fun gun and accurate as well now, three things I didn't like about it, stupid semi buckhorn sight, even more stupid safety and it's stainless which I don't like at all.
Fitted a truglo front and marbles bulls eye rear will eventually fit a bolt mounted peep sight in place of the safety when Steve's Gunz exports to the UK.
In the interim I'm gonna drill and tap the receiver for a williams peep sight now my 94 win has a side mounted scope on it.
Mine likes 158 grn TC and swc 180 grain hard cast boolits loaded up with 2400 it also likes factory S&B 158 grn fmj TC bullets which are cheap as chips over here in the UK and one of the most cost effective ways of getting good quality brass ( 100 rounds of S&B factory ammo £34, 100 bag of starline brass £27, so I get 100 loads for effectively £7, not bad with primers at £6 per 100,cast boolits at £8.50 a hundred and then there's powder on top of that.
It's become my go to gun and I've put more rounds downrange with it in the past year than I've shot out of all my other guns combined (except the 10/22)

1st pic shows the marble bullseye, 2nd pic shows my Xmas turkey 5 shot group, its the 5 shots on the plain paper, and the 3rd image shows my 30/30 with red dot (sight since sold on) and williams receiver peep and the Rossi.

So I got to play with several new Rossi r92 rifles at the gun store today, and all of them had better finish and wood to metal fit than the previous two I owned. I think I'll be picking up a few in different calibers as finances allow.

I've also read that Rossi has significantly upped their quality in recent years. Reading reviews of prior models complaining about dull finish, I bought some Danish Oil to refinish the stock. Mine looked so good out of the box that I'm going to wait until it looks bad before touching it. The blueing looks pretty good, too.

Only small hitch was the stock screws weren't tight enough from the factory, resulting in a little bit of wobble after the first 100 rounds or so. I removed them, put some Loc Tite on the threads and re-torqued and now everything is solid. As I work in the action, replacing springs, I'm going to do this to other screws, as well.

If you get a 16" model, I highly recommend trimming a little bit off the magazine tube spring as I've read they use the same springs for the 20" and the 16". It was tight getting the advertised 8 .38 spl in the gate before trimming, now I can fit 9 in the tube with ease and reliability is still perfect (so far).

I had a Rossi 20" 357 many years ago. Like around 1998 or along those lines. It shot jacketed bullets really well but just would not shoot lead bullets no matter what I tried. By 30 yards they were starting to tip. I called Interarms and asked what the rifling twist was and they told me all Rossi levers came with a 1/30 twist. I don't know if that was the problem or not. Anyway in 2000 I bought a Marlin 357 with Ballard rifling and that gun shoots everything well. Its my favorite firearm. The Rossi left.

I would like to try one of the new Rossi's in 357. I would rather have the 20" barrel over the 16" barrel. The wood on Bannocks gun in post #33 is outstanding. What a nice looking gun. I hope it shoots at least half as good as it looks. I am a real fan of lever actions. I have AR rifles and understand why they are so well liked but levers just make me feel all warm and gooey on the insides. I have a new Henry 30-30 on my GB watch list right now. And the new Winchester takedown has my full attention too. So many levers, so little money. :(

No don't do it. Put it down and walk away. Those R92 and the old pumas have a reaction to the human brain. You get plenty for your money. They make too many calibers and barrel lengths.you must have more than one or two

They will wear the finish some, but it's traditional, as is the use of a one point sling for the calvary. I say go for it.

I saw a picture of @bannockburn rifle without the glare some time back, it’s even better looking than what you can see in the #33 photo.

Probably best looking Rossi wood I’ve ever seen.

My Rossi’s stock, unfortunately, looks like they repurposed a pallet.

Yep. Some of the older Rossi's had that Brazlian mystery wood on 'em.

My old Interarms Rossi 92 in .44 mag had a weird black finish that really covered up the grain. After I stripped it off and saw what it covered up, I was actually pretty happy.

It now has several coats of boiled linseed oil and looks much better.
