i picked up a nice newman bros sxs twist barrels. gun is tight and now rust. i have 12 brass shells for it and was thinking anyone load round balls and have them shoot good.both bores are cyl. is there a way to shot a patched ball or just use a plastic shot cup. it would be cool to take a deer with one. i am using black powder. and info will help or tell me if im wasting my time. thanks. troy.

I am not sure that I would consider that shotgun safe to shoot, even with black powder. My understanding is that barrels of that construction can hide rust and weak spots, which will only reveal themselves when the barrel fails spectacularly.

Others may have a more well informed opinion.

the barrels are in very good shape. nice tight twists now pitting i have shot many with bp and as long as u have the right shell there is no problem. the barrels ring real nice to doing the rib test. thanks for the concern.

Go over to Nitro Express web site. They love all kinds of double rifles.
There is a section for Paradox and Bore guns, that is a gauge gun (12) that has rifled barrels.
They also welcome smooth bore guns.
A lot of knowledge there.

You will have to pay attention to ball diameter as well as the size of the brass hull. The most common brass hulls are drawn brass and regular 12 gauge wads are too small....the hull interior is actually 11ga. You can load these as you would a muzzleloader.: primed hull, 2 3/4 drams of FFg BP, fiber wad (11 ga.), then patch your round ball and seat it. How well this shoots varies from gun to gun.

I would be very weary of Damascus barrels. You can shoot them, people do but sometimes they even ultrasound the barrels. The issue is Damascus barrels can rust from the inside out leaving no traces of structural compromise. Yours may be fine, or it may not be. Before I take the risk I would have it checked out by a smith
