What do you guys think about notifying an officer during a routine traffic stop that your're CCW carrying, even if the law does not require it ?

Bad idea. It's gotten people into unneeded trouble where there would not have been, and VERY recently.

Ohio requires notification, but ONLY if you're carrying. Some cops will harass you if you don't notify when you're NOT carrying. They have no right to do so and open themselves to lawsuit if they press it too far.

Um, some states require you too, some don't. What state are you in? If you do not notify and the find out you have it on you, bye bye permit at the very least.

If you are in a State that requires you too.

I'd say no, don't do it unless required. Answer truthfully if asked and I'd probably mention if the officer requests you exit the vehicle for any reason, mainly because it may inadvertently show during your exit.

When in a confrontation with a LEO, do not say anything that doesn't need to be said, plain and simple. The officers is approaching you with no background of who you are. He approaches you with the same suspicion as he would a drug dealer. Stay polite and keep your mouth shut.

This isn't bad-mouthing LEO's since many of them are great guys. Think about how you would approach a confrontation with an individual who already is aggravated that you pulled them over, knowing that their is a chance, albeit a small one, that things can get ugly. The cop's red flags are up, yours should be as well.

I cringe every time I see the words "confrontation" and "LEO" in the same sentence.

Can we use the word "encounter" instead? Or some other more neutral sounding word?

I subscribe to the don't mention it unless asked specifically school of thought.

If you do want to unilaterally notify, be careful about how you do so.

Don't start with "Officer, I have a gun..."

While there may be merit to the clam up option, I have been stopped while CCWing three times. On all three instances when they asked for ID I handed them my wallet and CHL and then put my hands on the steering wheel and asked them what they wanted me to do. Two of them acted like they didn't really care and it was no big issue. The one officer actually thanked me and said he appreciated the fact that I volunteered my CHL although I am not required to do sounder Oregon law.

Let's see how would Treo answer this?

I live in Colorado I am not required to inform unless specifically asked. I don't say anything to a cop I'm not required to say.

You may get a pro-gun cop, you may get an anti. There's no way to know until you say something.

On the cops side you're handing him one more problem to deal W/.

Where required by law:
Officer, I hold a concealed weapons permit - which I will gladly submit for your inspection - and am presently armed.

Otherwise:
Am I free to go?

IANAL.

AZ doesn't require notification, but if I'm carrying I'll hand the officer my CWP along with my driver's license.

I'd rather the officer find out from me than be surprised later. I haven't met an officer around here who was anti-gun and most of them seem to treat a CWP as a 'good guy card'.

If the prevailing attitudes of the local police were different I might change my tune.

SC law requires notification; otherwise I would not do it. No good can come of it. The *best* case scenario is that nothing happens. Worst case scenario is you get verbally hassled or worse.

I think I've been pulled 4 times while carrying; 3 times I got no reaction from them, once they took it and ran the serial number; it only took a couple minutes.. So, no big deal so far, but that doesn't mean it could never go badly wrong.

There is no upside, but potential downside, so why do it if you don't have to?

I don't speak unless spoken to, and I make my answers as short as possible (usually relegated to only "yes" or "no").

Sooooo... he/she doesn't ask, I don't tell.

did they take the rest of your property that was in the car and run those serial numbers as well?

NV does not require it

Yet all the Reno cops act like it does, they have told me they will have my permit revoked,(for failure to notify during traffic stop) of course when they informed the Sherrif they probably got served.
Reno cops also told me my permit will be revoked for carrying a revolver different from the one on my permit, of course that is now legal too.

A good friend and old fashioned gunny sgt I know told me "cops don't know guns, laws and cars"
I am begining to think he is right.
I always let the cops know (when carrying in NV) because they will freak out on you if you don't.

This question has been touched on several times before.

But I live in VA. We're not required to notify the LEO. I've been pulled over 3 times since being issued my permit.

First time was actually in WV Harpers Ferry area. I did all the usual things, turn on the interior lights, keep hands on the wheel etc. Handed him DL, reg and CC permit. He seemed to relax after that and gave me a warning to slow down. I also had my friend and her daughter in the car which may have lowered his BP some.

Second time, in VA. Again, for mild speeding. Handed over the same stuff, officer handed back my permit saying, "I don't need this".

Third time, again...handed it back to me.

I just do it as a courtesy. They can pull up on their 'puter I have a permit, so it's pretty much moot.

The officers is approaching you with no background of who you are. He approaches you with the same suspicion as he would a drug dealer.

That's definitely not true in other parts of the country. Around here, it's a simple traffic stop. And guess what, some of these LEO's have actually been very nice and helpful. I had a problem with a car recently and had to pull over. LEO stopped, and we spent the next 10 minutes trying to figure out the issue. Turns out the e-brake was on, but he tried!
