Friend of mine ordered one for me, and it's on the way.

Questions:

1. How does the firearm secure inside the vest? I see references to velcro.
2. Do I have to buy a holster to put in said pockets and attach velcro to the holster?
3. Can I just insert a weapon in the pockets loose?

Any other comments about this vest would be greatly appreciated. I did a search on the board, and didn't find this information.

Thanks.

Hmm, can't even find the vest on RoyalRobbins' website.

Well, at the outset, I'll be using OWB holsters with the vest, as they advertise the increased length for such a purpose.

Thanks for your response and the link. Ya, I don't feel comfortable about a loose gun in a pocket.

Edit: Might be able to build such an animal myself, but the $9.99 price tag isn't too bad.

Edited Further: Just cannibalized a small velcroed holster out of a fanny pack. So, I'm covered for my PA-63. :)

Think I'll order a Blackhawk for my SteyrM40.

Thanks again TarpleyG.

Any other comments, tricks and traps, folks?

1. How does the firearm secure inside the vest? I see references to velcro.

Eagle Industries also makes them, as does blackhawk like the prev poster mentioned. You buy these separately and they go on the velcro panels.

2. Do I have to buy a holster to put in said pockets and attach velcro to the holster?

Yes (see above), there are also magpouches, cuffpouches and baton pouches.

3. Can I just insert a weapon in the pockets loose?

Depends. I wouldn't do it for anything but a J-frame. A P7M8 is also relatively safe but too heavy. Then it's way low and unless you're left handed, the only pocket it will fit in is in the wrong side--and it's a velcro flap which may not be that secure, compared to say, a zippered pouch or something.

If you're small torsoed like me, you may find that the guns hang too low and can get uncomfortable on the shoulders and swing around too much, and provide for an awkward draw. Feels like going for a crossdraw around your knees.

LMAO. Nope, I’m large torsoed, with short legs.

Well, I took a good look at both of Blackhawk’s offerings. I then realized, I have a NOT-EVER used fanny pack for small carry weapons I bought at a gun show a couple years ago, with an internal velcroed holster.

I pulled it, sewed it for tight fit, for my PA63 (9x18mm commie Walther-type weapon). Now I’m covered for one weapon.

I’m going to probably just build myself a holster for my SteyrM40. I have a hunk of leather that I can fashion a holster out of for a tight enough holster and then glue some male Velcro on. It doesn’t have to look pretty, as long as it’s functional . Tactically sealed inside the vest.

SKUNKTACTICAL 5.11 VEST (“CA Editionâ€)

Thanks, Skunk for replying. Are the pockets large enough and is the fabric tough enough to hold 1911?

I mean, does this vest really hold weight well?

Trust me, I’m planning on carrying the cell phone, maybe the PDA, extra mags x2, G2 flashlight, 2 knives, notepad and pen, sunglasses (mirrored) and everything else I can carry.

The thing I didn't like about the vest is the upper pockets don't have any sort of retention. If you have a phone, PDA or anything and you put it on the high pockets, put a lanyard on it.

The left-side pocket has loops for mags and stuff, but I never used them extensively.

The sunglass pocket has a brass (?) zipper--I'd be paranoid about scratching them.

Oh...if you want cool sunglasses.

Oakley X-Metal Juliets, baby.

Groovy. Nah, I'll stick with my Maui Jim's.

Dang, hate to hear that about the top pockets.

Looks like i might have to do my own mods with needle and thread, and whatever else it takes to make this vest:

In response to Carlos from Portland on how well the vest carries, we load them with a ton of stuff and it works pretty well. One fellow loads up the back water bottle pockets with spare mags (a lot of spare mags). The vest wears okay, but I would reinforce the bottoms with nylon if I were to carry pointy or sharp edged things (like those spare mags in the back pockets).

On an aside, I am missing Portland, it rained here in the Big I all day and it reminds me of Oregon. sniff......

Well, it arrived today. PA-63 sits comfortably in left inside pocket.

Overall the vest fits perfect. No looseness whatsoever. With my long body, the length is just right.

I'll probably be putting stuff in and out of it all night and might end up sleeping in it.

just spent ten days hiking around barcelona with my RR 511 vest. Great stuff. Held my 1.5 L water bottle. Inner document pocket held Itin and passport. outer pockets had junk. The inner pockets are why the vest owns. You can fit literally anything in there.

Excellent. I'd love to see a pic or two of the place.

Well, since my last post I have filled up (configured) this vest in many ways. I have one small complaint - the inside left breast pocket. Sure great idea, but why not one on the inside right, too??? I mean, Jeez, you can almost put an AK-47 30 rd in there.

I love this vest. Now I'm going to have the pants, and shorts too.

SKKKUNNNNNNKKKKK!!!!!

Now I'm becoming addicted to tactical clothing. I'm going to wear this thing until it falls off my back.
