My Ruger Super Blackhawk s.s. with 4-5/8" barrel is frame-marked (K)XR-3. The frame appears to be shorter than the tracing for an XR-3 frame, but is not set up for the locking mainspring as cited here.

Does anyone have experience with this pistol configuration? If so, have you had success putting Pachmayr grips on it? I love the way it handles and shoots, but I would like it to be a bit more comfortable for extended range sessions with hotter loads.

I'm just surprised I couldn't find more info on-line for this particular variant of the RSBH

Should add: the Ruger webpage for serial number ranges says this pistol was made in 2000.

The grip frame is the XR3-RED pattern, regardless of what is stamped on the frame. Ruger has gone to great lengths to make things extremely confusing for anybody who does not study this stuff constantly. In short, the 4 5/8" and 5 1/2" Supers have the standard Blackhawk pattern grip frame. Only in steel. Which is different from the 7 1/2" and 10" Supers.

Trying not to get into too much detail the original flat-tops (1955-1962), New Model flat-tops (2005-present), New Vaquero (2005-present), some fixed sight Single Sixes and obviously the birdshead models all have different grip frames.

Thank you, CraigC; I did get the Pachy grips for a regular BH, and they fit the SBH very well (except for some minor rubber "mold flashing" at the edges).

The new pachy grip fills my hand better than the factory, and these aren't the screw & metal-loop types; which makes it easier to switch back when I want the lower profile/prettier grips.

Oh, added a new locking cylinder pin, too.
