Rubber grips going back on my Bulldog.

:thumbup:My Kimber K6S wears Altamont smooth grips for when I ccw. For a no snag carry, rubber seems to slow down my draw by catching on clothes. When I do practice at the range the rubber grips go back on the gun. MHO:thumbup::thumbup:

In 1989 my NIB RB 3" 629-1 came sporting wood grips.

Those grips look nice, but they weren't quite right for me. Every time I fired more than 6 rounds without patrol gloves, I ended up with a bloody knuckle.

I replaced them with Pachmayrs, but those weren't quite right, either ... but shooting did not bloody my bare hands. ;)

Some years later, I replaced those Pachmayrs with a set of Hogues that were better, but still not right.

8-10 years ago I read about the new Pachmayr Diamond Pros and ordered a set. Right. :)

Those rubber grips are a nice compromise of various factors. I go back to them from time to time on my .38 Undercover. I end up going back to wood tho because there is just something about wood and a revolver...

I too retired the wood grips on my old 3" Bulldog in .44 Spl. I still have them packed up. At 21 ounces, recoil can be brisk.

As much as I love the look and feel of nicely figured Goncalo Alves, Zebrawood or other beautiful wood grips on a handgun, shooting a gun with them can be a nightmare... sadly, in a way, function always rides supreme over looks for me...

Stay safe!

I just ordered one of the new CA Mag Pugs in .41 Magnum. Can't wait to see what the recoil is like on that. o_O At least it comes with rubber grips.

Next time start with 44 special then go to 44 mag. I had a 629 S&W a 1/2 box of full house 44 mag through that gun would wear me out.

Pachmayr makes their “Compac” and “Gripper” models to fit Charter Arms revolvers. I have both and the Gripper soaks up recoil the best. It’s a bit large for concealed carry though.

If1hitU, I agree wholeheartedly with you on the those grips I went and put those same grips on my CA Bulldog SS .44SPL with 2.5" barrel. One trip to the range was all it took for me. They sure do look cool though.

Brutal is my guess.

Luckily I've found some .41 mag "cowboy loads" from HSM. Not horribly expensive. Also, the 175 grain (I think) Winchester Super X silver tip look promising. Above the cowboy loads, but not extreme. I've purchased both and I'm looking forward to trying them out in the gun when it arrives.

I load 200 - 215 grain lead with Red Dot, Unique or ________ for 900 -1000 fps in a Blackhawk. Would go lighter in a CA.

I know everyone is built different, but I've found that on double action revolvers, rubber grips work best for me. Specifically, on S&W round butt frames (and Super Redhawk), the Houge 500 X Frames with the covered backstrap are the most comfortable. Just got back from shooting my S&W M69 2 3/4" .44 Mag using 240gr JSPs over 24.0gr W296 (these chrono a little over 1,100 fps in the short barrel). As an experiment, I modified a set of X Frame grips that were about worn out by removing the finger groves and rounding the bottom. They work great and I'll being doing the mod on a set of new grips shortly. I can't believe how much fun this gun is and how well it shoots for me and how well it handles recoil. It puts a smile on my face every time out. Here's a picture of the little gun with the experimentally modified grips.

I've had few - if ANY - handguns in my life where the decision on grips was more absolute than my .44 Bulldog.
After a couple three "You gotta try ******, they're the best on a Bulldog!" I always returned to the old Pachmayrs that it came with.

And happily too.

Todd.
