I'm looking to buy a new bolt action rifle chambered for .308 win. But I can't decide between the rugar mk 77 of the remington model 700 is there ant distinct advantages or disadvantages to either one of these rifles or should I be looking at another make and model all together. Any advice would be appreciated

Neither. Get yourself a Savage Model 10 series rifle. Such as a 10FP. Super accurate, smooth action, best out of box trigger in the business( accutrigger ), and a low price. 20 years ago, no one would have thaught that Savage would be the countries most popular rifle company. I have yet to here a bad word about the model 10Fp, except maybe about the synthetic stocks.

Either. They're both good rifles. The Remington is easier to accurize, the Ruger has a stock shape lots of people (including me) happen to like. The Ruger also has the best scope mounting system on the planet that comes included with the rifle.

Out of those two I would go with the Rem 700 just because it has a better trigger and one that is easily adjustable. The Ruger 77's aren't bad rifles but I hate their triggers. If I were seriously wanting a fine shooting 308 then check out this one HERE. These rifles are awesome shooters and even have a set trigger that allows you to set the trigger and have around a 1 # pull when it is set.

What do you plan to use it for?

Savage probably gives you the best bang for the buck in terms of out of the box accuracy for the lowest price. The Ruger or the Remington would be fine hunting rifles. But if you want a platform for a project gun, I'd opt for the Remington 700. Great adjustable trigger, and lots of aftermarket parts. It would give you the most options.

But for a hunting rifle, there are lots of alternatives.

I have both and really like both designs...

for just fun hunting and shooting, I like the Remingtons. For hard hunting or serious knocking around I love the Rugers. My Rugers are a tad bit more accurate than my Rems. I installed Timney Triggers in all my Rugers and they are a joy! I really like the safety on the Rugers because you can see that the firing pin is blocked. It also locks the bolt handle down. I thought alot about what I wanted on in a rifle while on a 12 day moose hunt in AK; it came out to be a Ruger M77.

Either way you will be fine.

Hope this helps,

Matt

They're not. Remington is the country's most popular bolt-action centerfire. Besides which, he aked for opinions on Ruger and Remington, not a Savage ugly stick (sorry to you Savage folks, but accurate or not, they are ugly;) )

To the Original Question, In my experience Remington's tend to be slightly more accurate out of the box than Rugers, but the M77 is still an MOA capable gun with a decent load. I have both M700's and M77's and use both for hunting. My sister took her first cow elk with a Ruger M77 all-weather in .280 Rem. We opted for the Ruger for her because it came with a 22" barrel; the Rem. was 26". 4" makes a big difference in terms of snagging tree branches. The Ruger was also $200 less and they come with scope rings.

If you want to squeeze a little more accuracy or customize the gun, the M700 is the way to go. If you want a good, solid hunting rifle either will work, but the Ruger will give you the rifle and a decent 3-9x scope (like the Nikon Buckmaster) for about the same $$ as the Remington rifle alone.

I happen to shoot a Ruger in 30-'06, which I really enjoy, but would not feel uncomfortable with the Remington 700 or the Savage either. Find some you can shoot, perhaps with friends, feel which ones feel better throwing to your shoulder in a shop and just go with your gut.
And a good deal on one or the other might help also...

I have both but would definitely recommend the Remington M700. I think
they are usually very accurate out of the box, they have an easily tunable
trigger and there is a huge amount of aftermarket parts and accesories
available for them.

I have never heard anything bad about a 77, but I have had three 700s chambered in .308, I had the triggers lightened up to 3 lbs, and all three of them were MOA or better out of the box.

The gunsmith, who was rolling his eyes at me because I keep buying the rifles, hitting financial trouble and selling them, asked me why I didn't look at a Savage. So I met someone who had one, with the new accutrigger, and he let me shoot it. Honestly, I wasn't that impressed. I didn't feel nearly as clean of a break as the Remingtons.

If I had to pick one bolt rifle to do everything, I would get a Remington 700 VS in .308, with a middle-grade Leupold 3-10x. (I've had one.) Anything more specific is catering to skills that aren't as polished as I pretend they are.

Right now I have a .308 in a Rem., Ruger (2), and a Howa. Love them all. I would lean a bit towards the Ruger since it seems to be the one I use the most. But I just got the Howa and have not really had much chance to play.
All shoot under an inch at 100 yds.

Either of the rifles mentioned in your original post are good. Also don't forget about ruger. The model 7 remington ig good as well.
