It really wasn't supposed to be like this. I swear I went to Cabelas in Tualitin Oregon just to buy ammo. OK, I needed some new hunting boots as well. And they had a StackOn reloading bench I'd had shipped there. But that was it, nothing more. I promised myself (and others) I would not walk into the Gun Library. But I did, I was weak.

It was love at first sight when I saw the Ruger #1 stainless in .223 Rem. A few minutes spent online indicated these are a 1:8 twist, and the few out there are asking $500 or more than Cabelas. Right then I knew the moment was right, I'd already broken every rule so why not go all the way; I bought it

A few pictures to share the joy with the good folks here at THR, range report to follow!

Oh, what a beautiful rifle! I want one in a much larger caliber, but if i saw that and had the funds, it would be mine.

Fine rifles, hope you enjoy it for many years of pleasurable shooting. More than once on trips to Columbus, Ohio we have done the mandatory Cabela's stop and more than once my I just need some powder and primers evolves into a gun. I am always attracted to the gun library. They just opened a smaller store up my way in Avon, Ohio but their gun library isn't online yet.

I would have jumped on it. Not that I really need another gun but I love 223, 1:8 twist is perfect, and the #1 has a ton of cool factor.

Congrats!

You have a nice rifle there! You definitely can't go wrong with a class Ruger No.1. I have two of them myself and I try to buy everyone I see that is in excellent shape that's priced under $900. They are getting few and far between at that price point and seem to be over the $1k mark now.

Mount up a nice optic and you'll have a classic rifle that will remain classic for many years to come. I say nice purchase!

I would have been weak in the knees (and in the willpower department too), with a beauty like that! Congrats on caving in on yet another great gun!

Thanks all for the kind words. I can still (thankfully) count on one hand the number of times I've said to myself "I'm not leaving the store without that gun". Sig X5, unfired S&W 27-2 5", and now this No. 1. Well, there was a Ruger Red Label 20 gauge, but my parole.., umh, wife was with me on that one.

Cabela's pricing can be odd. They put $400 on a $200 Mosin, then put $400 on a Leupold scoped CZ 527 Varmint (was mine the moment I saw it).

I realize they're "cool", but I've never understood the attraction for a single shot lever rifle. Maybe in a magnum caliber, but why the added weight and strength for a single shot 223? At twice the cost of a bolt action 223? What am I missing?

For myself, it's a minimalist thing. I suppose a break-action would be even more so, but they're less practical on the bench. Even purely as a mind exercise, making your one, and probably only shot count is it's own teacher.

As far as value, I have far more efficient ways to launch .223; they're all cheaper and just as much fun.

What you're missing is isnt "cool", it's "classic". It's an iconic design that no other manufacturer copies. It's quality and craftsmanship that is rare in this day and age. A bolt action 223? Whoopty-do...everyone and their brother has one and they all look the same.

A Ruger No.1 says something about a man. It tells me they are a connoisseur and not just your average consumer. They have taste and style when it comes to guns.

And from a hunter's perspective, it tells me they are confident in their ability to shoot, to know their weapon, and to know what shot to take and what shot to pass on.

Thanks for the upgrade Olympus :)

First 2 pics reciever looks blued, other pic it looks stainless ?
Is that a Ruger barrel or was it rebarreled in stainless ?
Looks great either way.

Cabela's is a strange place. I was in there yesterday looking for a used .223.

There in the Library I stumbled onto an entire rack of Ruger #1's. I think there were 8 or 9 of them there. Some widower must have sold her deceased husbands entire collection of #1's for a song. I say this because several were in the $750 range. I looked at everyone hoping to find a 223. I found one with a heavy barrel which didn't appeal to me. If I had seen the one you bought I would have made it mine. Probably just as well because I'm trying to get into a 223 for a lot less. I don't need to be looking at #1's.

I've always wanted a #1 and I'm trying very hard to talk myself out of it. There just aren't that many around and will be discontinued when they can't sell enough of them to keep the product line. It happened to their over and under shotguns.

You won't regret that impulse purchase.

CoalTrain49, the Cabelas where I bought this one had a Perazzi O/U behind glass, $22,950. I wan't even tempted to handle it, lol.

I passed on a NOS Red Label 20 ga, it was fairly priced and mint. It was about a week or two after Sandy Hook, NICS was backed up, BG checks taking several hours. My better half looked at the gun, the BG check line and gave me "the look". I wisely set it back on the table and moved along :(
