hey everyone, just got myself a ruger 10/22 carbine, used and well loved, as far as i can see just cosmetic wear, except for a wonky safety ( it likes to slide on after a half dozen shots). i was wondering if anyone had suggestions or thoughts on accessories for it. im also debating the idea of form 1 registering the reciever, that way i can throw on a charger or cohort barrel and pistol stock if i wanted.

oh, that reminds me, it has a rail on it but tis kinda weird, its attached with 5 screws, theres 6 hols, 2 holes are smaller, and ne of the screws is smaller for one of the smaller holes. the other 4 holes cut through the finish, so they were done buy the last owner im guessing. the rail "hangs" off the reciever over the barrel about a quarter of an inch, and you cant really see the iron sights because of the rail. any suggestions? should i remove it and get a better rail, or are there raised iron sights i can get?

tech sights, a USGI sling, and lots of ammo
and magazines, at least 5 from Ruger in 10x rotary style. The clear ones are cool, the black ones are fine. After that, consider some of the new Ruger bx25 mags or some HotLips/SteelLips stick magazines.
RE: ammo, I'd get a selection if you don't have a bunch of .22lr on hand already, and see what runs best.

no idea without pictures, I'd lose the rail, make sure the original holes were there and in good condition, and install a TechSight set, which replaces the rail with a rear sight mount and swaps the front sight for a better version.

what's a "pistol stock"?
The Ruger Charger, like the Remington XP-100 and Savage Striker, has a stock, rather than a grip.

Although Herrett's and many others refer to their grips as "stocks". ;)

heres a couple shots of the rail, on the right one you can see how the end of the rail hangs off of the edge of the reciever, over the barrel

I was about to chime in with, fix the safety, then Tech sights, USGI sling and some extra mags. But I must say I'll be checking out that VQ hammer myself. I just googled it and it looks like a winner at about $35.

Oh yeah, and personally I'd ditch the rail. I had a scope on my 1022 at one time but prefer the tech sights that are on it now. Especially if you're going to keep it in carbine configuration and not add a heavy baarel or anything.

iv been looking around online, since im abit on a budget i think i found a good little kit. its Christie's 10/22 accessories kit over on rimfiresports, for 25$ it includes an auto bolt release, extended mag release, recoil buffer pin and a larger cocking handle.

rail is junk, whoever put it on did so crooked, irritates me, theres 5 holes in the reciever because of it, dont know if i can ever get a rail on there straight now

That's a Weaver T-09, which is the correct mount for the rifle. It has extra holes in it and it looks like the previous owner decided to drill and tap for one of them. It does look like the extra hole lines up with the rest of them. One of my 10/22's has its optic rail mounted with six 6-48 screws and one 4-40.

Well assuming that the gun is factory tapped. you can pick up a 10/22 rail for cheap. And that one would be straight.
Also stay away from non Rugers mags.

my friend noticed when he put his scope on it the scope was crooked
I don't know how that would be the base's fault. You have four factory drilled and tapped holes there and the fifth, which goes into a supplied hole in the Weaver base, lines up with them.

do ruger 10/22s normally have 5 holes drilled and tapped in the top of the reciever? one of the holes is smaller and lines up with one of the 2 smaller holes in the rail, which seem to be factory holes because the holes have blueing. the other 4 larger holes in the rail are bright, cutting through the finish. the 4 larger holes in the reciever are kinda rough and dont look very proffesional.

no, four

You obviously need this:
https://ruger-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/_manuals/1022.pdf
That manual may or may not address your exact model (some parts have changed materials over the years) but on page 38 the scope mount is clearly illustrated.
29 and 30 have mounting instructions, and an illustration of the two common types of rails, but they both mount the same way.

Honestly, as I'm not a big fan of optics, I'd dump the scope rail nonsense and mount a rear aperture on the rear holes, and leave the other holes alone. I hope you got a deal on that little rifle, because it does look a little bit like bubba had his hands on it.

oooook, thanks dave, you cleared alot up for me. it does have the 4 factory holes, and the fith smaller hole is not a factory hole. the rail was modifed to fit the gun, not so much the other way around thankfully. this means i can get a proper rail for this gun and it should be just fine

fix the safety, get a vq hammer, upgrade sights to your choice. I'm sure tech sights are great, but to me they look goofy. They don't fit the lines of the gun. I went with a williams peep and a fire sight. the bushnell tr-25 micro red dot is a good choice too. I also like the mag releases that are a big lever along the trigger guard. Tacsol and some others make them.

i just thought of something... how big are the holes supposed to be?i have a bad feeling that the factory holes might of been drilled out bigger...

don't know, rimfirecentral would be likely to have that sort of info stashed somewhere.

you could compare to an existing scope mount screw or filler screw, or you could order screws, or you could order a scope mount that comes with screws
