I have acquired my grand fathers Ruger 10/22 Carbine rifle. I thought it was older then it actually is from my memories. But according the serial number, it was probably made and sold between 1979 and 1981. It has a wooden stock, which is in emaculate condition. The barrel is of course 18.5”
Everything original.

I have added a picatinny rail to the top, and changed out the mag release for an aluminum extended release and an oversize aluminum charging handle so far. I am not going to change out the trigger as I prefer a heavier trigger pulls over a lighter ones.

I had another thread asking about the difference in silencers of the mask, switchback.

However, now after actually getting the Ruger in my actual hands, I am having some doubts. Which I could use some insight on.

Option 1. Forgo getting a threaded barrel and the silencer, and just get the Gemtech suppressor barrel. Cost $499 (outside of the $200 tax)

Option 2. Get a threaded barrel, and then either suppressor. Total cost, $599 (not counting $200 tax)

With option 2, there are several options for threaded barrels.
12” SBR taper SS, 16.5” SS available in bull and taper and available with 1:16 twist or 1:9 twist. which twist should I go with.

Then 18.5” SS available in the two twist rates in either of the two bull or taper.

So what advantages does a bull version have over the taper? It says that one should NOT use the subsonic 60 grain Aguila In the 1:16 twist barrels and should get the 1:9 twist.

So if I wanted to be as quiet as possible with the 10/22, I’m thinking the 16.5” in 1:9 twist and using the 60 grain Aguila? But in bull or taper? But if I do that, it says not to use normal velocity or high velocity ammo either?

If I go with getting a form 1 12” barrel and using slower ammo, wouldn’t the shot barrel keep the ammo subsonic? Especially if I am using ammo rated at around 1080fps and the speed of sound hovers around 1050fps? (Barring altitude, temp, etc...)

Thoughts? Which option would you go with? Which barrel would you go with? If making a SBR wasn’t a form 1 hassle, would you go with the 12” taper? (Only available in a 1:16 twist). I do want to stay away from the sonic boom when using a suppressor.

One last though... I saw slip on threads that were stabilized by 3 set screws. Somehow I don’t see that as being a good idea for a suppressor. Maybe a flash suppressor/muzzle break but not a heavy suppressor like a dead air mask. Thoughts?

Personally, I wouldn’t change a thing about the gun. I would leave as is mostly for nostalgic reasons. I would, however, look at buying a new gun and then go to town on that one.

You say that because it was my grandfathers gun from the late 70’s early 80’s? None of the upgrades would be permanent I could keep all the old parts and go back to where it came from. :)

So even if I bought a new 10/22, again which barrels etc??? I like the idea of staying with the same 22lr gun so I can use the same mag etc...

I have both a Ruger American Rimfire and a 10/22. The RAR is far, far quieter than the 10/22, just because of the action. For whatever that's worth.

I have a 10-22 that was a graduation gift to me over 30 years ago. All that has been done to it is I mounted a 4x scope on it and attached a sling. This gun shoots 1" groups or better at 50 yards with cheap winchester ammo. My suppressor host 22 is a Savage MK2 bolt action. With Remington or aguilla subs it is so quiet that the sound of the bullet strike is louder then the sound of the gunshot, and it also shoots very tight groups. I also know that the bolt action is always going to be more quiet and more reliable than any auto with subs. I would go this route and just get a bolt action as a suppressor host instead of buying a bunch of stuff to modernize your grand dad's rifle.

If you like the 10/22 action you might consider a Brownells receiver and building a Charger pistol with brace. Then you can run any length barrel you choose without an SBR and additional taxes.

I have a bunch of 10/22’s, all setup differently. Really just depends on what you want or expect out of it.

One I use quite a bit though is my SBR I built that has a folder and I shortened, threaded and moved the front sight back on the barrel.

Forget the 60g Aguila SSS in a semi-auto. You'll get a lot of noise and sparks out of the action and it is not pleasant to shoot, even with a suppressor.
