Ruger 10/22 problem

So I took out the 10/22 today to knock out the cobwebs. It would cycle, but not fire on the second round. I mean, work the bolt, fire. It would load another .22, but not fire. I'm guessing the hammer would not cock.
When working the bolt, it seemed the same as ever. Would pull halfway very easy, then seems like a second stage, harder to pull. Always been like that with no problems.
So today it was a single shot. Still accurate as ever. My 8 year old was shooting bowling pins at 100 yards (benchrest). I pulled it apart and gave it a good cleaning, not very dirty to start with (150 rounds). Any ideas what would cause this? I'm guessing the bolt was not cycling far enough to cock the hammer? What to do now? I tried CCI, Winchester and Federal (I think Federal??) ammo with the same results.

Have you taken apart and cleaned the bolt assy?

I did not totally strip the bolt. I removed it, soaked it in break free... Dried and a slight coat of oil.

Check for any type of primer strike. Sounds like the bolt is not going enough to the rear to keep the hammer in the cocked position. Try some different ammo after cleaning. It could also be something wrong in the sear area but it does sound either dirty or ammo problem getting the bolt to fully cock. Place a strip of tape along the opening where the charging handle is. This will tell you if the bolt is going all the way back when it fires.

I cleaned it oh so well now. I'll give it a try and if it doesn't work, I'll do the tape trick. Sorta funny, I was thinking of jamming some clay in there to see if it smashes. I guess that has the making of a real mess.

Well, I've been tinkering with it and found the problem. Seems when the trigger is pulled, and held, the sear does not engage the hammer for whatever reason. If I dry fire, let off the trigger, it engages when I work the bolt. If I dry fire and hold the trigger, work the bolt, nothing, the hammer rides the bolt. Good thing there is not more force or this thing would be full auto.
So what now? Time for a new sear? It does not appear worn at all. Hopefully just a spring is out of alignment, but I really don't know what I'm looking at. Can't find a schematic or diagram.

I took the trigger assembly apart and all springs were there and so far in place. I pull the hammer back and pull the trigger, nice and crisp. If I keep the trigger held back, the trigger will not lock. Just back and forward, no catch at all. I cannot figure out what is wrong, this is driving me crazy, not far to go I may say. I'm really leaning towards buying the Volhortsen (sp) complete trigger assembly now. I'm actually surprised I haven't thrown the thing across the yard...... yet....

If the trigger does not catch the sear on the back swing then either one of the catching notches is worn, misaligned, too worn, or a small part or spring may not be installed correctly. Maybe the disconnector is just not tripping the sear. I would start by taking it all apart and making sure everything is where it should be. Even down to the trigger return spring and mag catch release.
