WP_20150403_13_02_38_Pro (1).jpg bought this old Ruger .44 mag carbine (marked on barrel as such. apparently someone had it chromed, don't think Ruger made one like this. only the barrel and upper is chromed, trigger guard is stainless type finish. Just yalls thoughts on this. I paid $500 for it done been offered $800 it is a shooting son of a gun, very little recoil compared to my Ruger M77/44. It has become my favorite hog gun in the brush, and I got a few thousand hogs in my cattle pastures.

according to the serial # it was made in 1972, six months ago I didn't own a .44 mag carbine, I do carry .44 mag Super Blackhawk for big pigs, now I got two and love them both, but when going in heavy brush the .44 mag auto (10/22 on steroids) has become a firearm that goes with me to check cattle. now planning on buying my better half a .357 carbine, should be just right for her.

sure it's chromed and not polished SS?
The early 44 carbines were never offered in stainless. The trigger guard, barrel band and butt plate are aluminum that's had the finish stripped and polished.

Clean standard ones run 500 to 600.
So 500 for an altered one, no matter how useful, is about tops.
If somebody offered you 800 you shoulda sold it, pocketed 200 and got one in original finish.

The fingergrooves are a bit more, and if factory checkered a fair chunk over that.

Well it's certainly different looking, as far as Ruger .44 Mag. carbines go. I think it's a decent buy at that price.

Ruger discontinued this type auto carbine in the mid 80s I think, they always seem to discontinue a series of firearms... I know the No. Ones are a niche gun, but they are only marketed thru Lipseys, wish they would bring back the .44 autos.

Do you know the difference between chrome and nickel finish? There are different types of chrome also. Decorative chrome, like is used on car bumpers isnt generally considered a good finish for guns, and has had some problems with changing the characteristics of hardened parts. It may be chrome, and may be fine. Then again, it may not be chrome, and may not be fine if it is chrome.

Nice gun in any event, so long as the refinish didnt do anything to compromise the proper hardness of any parts.

Very nice looking gun, I've got a standard .44Mag Carbine with a beautiful walnut stock, that I've been offered $600.00 for, however I'm a lot like you, I don't sell my guns, and I too have 3 gun vaults. I paid $250.00 at a pawn shop 15 years ago. Never had a problem with mine either it just keeps right on shooting.

Nice looking carbine at a good price! Nothing but good about that. Yes, the chrome is not ideal, but it's not that bad either. If it shoots well, it got a good deal. Maybe $500 is high some places, but not around here--it's a deal!

hope to hear back from Ruger next few days, don't know if it is chrome or nickel....whatever, it is a 43 year old carbine and the finish is still almost 100%. the guy I bought it from was selling firearms from a friend of his daughter that didn't like firearms and she had inherited them....so can only go by what he said and he said it was chromed. guess I'll find out soon. even the butt plate is "chromed"

Back before stainless became the norm several places offered nickel and or chrome finishes. Not long ago saw a Smith 29-2 that Magnaport hard chromed and it looked very close to stainless....just ever so slightly had a bluish tone. Some folks can spot it, others not.
