Ruger American COMPACT Pistol Announced

I'm happy Ruger discarded all those safeties and you gain 2 rounds... but at the expense of 5 ozs extra weight over the SR9c.
Not enough incentive for me to switch. Besides, my SR9c trigger is nothing short of awesome.
Now...if Ruger at last makes a 45ACP version I might take a look.

Pretty rugged looking. But I too might bite if it came in .45. It really doesn't offer more than what I already have in a Glock 19 and FNS compact.

My LGS tells me they can't give away the Americans they currently have in stock. It's hard to imagine this smaller version being much of a seller with all the other choices available for shooters.

I handled a full size one out of curiosity. It felt rather clunky and unnesesarily beefy to me to be honest. There were also what felt like a lot of seams in the polymer where different bits come together that really felt like they could have been fit a little better. The trigger was just sort of so so. I wasn't terribly impressed. I think the selling point is that it's an affordable duty sized pistol for range, home defense, and open carry.

But a compact model seems like you'd be wearing boots when all you need is sneakers.

Not looking to be disagreeable but I am not a Ruger person but I did acquire a RAP9 in February of this year. I also have a Glock G17 Gen3 and S&W MP9. I find the RAP9 to be comparable with the previously mentioned pistols. I like it enough to acquire a RAP9c to compare with my example G19 Gen3 and MP9c.:)

More ugly plastic . Not for me I will stick to my steel pistols You can have all the plastic. Cheap to make Expensive to buy == big profit.

I tend to agree with this.

I haven't read of anyone even online that has one of the full sized and don't know of anyone locally either.

The same $500 for the American gets you a Glock---bring the price to about $400 and I'll give the American a much closer look.

I got my wife the full sized 9mm Ruger American pistol. I haven't got to shoot it a lot but I like it. It is a good gun. I think MSRP was $579 or some such but Rugers never sell at full MSRP. We ordered it from online for $400. I would think the compact will also be good. The price may attract attention from some that don't want to pay Glock & M&P prices.

Like my SR9c just fine but would be interested in one in .45 in the compact version.

Where is this gun store? I will come there and the owner can give all the RAPs to me, I'll take them.

$399 at CDNN for the .45 version.

Kentucky Gun Co has both the 9mm and .45ACP for $422.40 shipped.

I have seen them at Gunbuyer.com for $399.99 shipped. So I gather you are going to give them a closer look now?

Some of us bought the SR9 because of the safety and mag disconnect. And the American will be offered in both flavors. Something Glock doesn't offer.

Yes some of us bought SR40's for the same reason. Plus it's the smoothest easiest shooting .40 I ever shot. If the American continues that kind of smooth, I may be interested, once a .40 is available. When one learns on .45 ACP colts, one really misses safeties. At least this one.;)

Got to hold and dry fire one at my gunsmiths shop last week.

It's ugly as sin IMO, but I liked everything else about it. The grip angle, texture, trigger pull, serrations....All good. It felt somewhat heavier than my G19, but not so much that I couldn't carry it.

I am in the same camp, although I do have some aluminum alloy framed pistols, but I just haven't warmed up to plastic, although it does work. This new Ruger does nothing for me, and I do not like there pistol line except for the MK series .22's, and I do like their revolvers.
