Ruger American Magpul Hunter 6.5CM vs 308?

No decision yet. Probably whatever I pick won't last long and I'll end up trading it for something else. I like to sample pretty much everything and there's really no single caliber that will stick with no matter what except for the 243.

@Olympus, I don't think you can go wrong with either.
One thing I like to do is check to see how many factory loads are available in a cartridge when I'm in the market for something new.
Midway USA listed 161 for .308 Win and 95 for 6.5 CM.
With 95 for the 6.5 makes it far from a new comer in the shooting world.

PPP!!!!

Proper Planning Prevents....uh...Put out ...new gun owner.... Or maybe it should be owner of new gun....

Anyway, sort of screwed myself up doing that last week. Sold my browning xbolt in 28 Nosler along with all the brass I had on hand ss loaded ammunition..... Just ordered a new Mesa Long Range in 28Nosler with the money from it, and now can't get any brass......

Economy of Scale is definitely one thing to consider for .308 Winchester...

...particularly for handloading!

For what other rifle caliber can an average joe get 15,000 "once fired" cases (other than .223 Remington, of course) without it significantly hurting the piggy bank?

I am much happier with my 6.5 CM RAR than I was with the 308 in terms of performance, accuracy, and recoil. OTOH, I only use it to hunt with, so ammunition availability and overall rounds used isn't a concern.

Was the buyer of the Browning a close enough friend that you could ask him for 20 cases and replace them when your brass comes in? Just a thought.....

Just ordered the 6.5 today as it was the first one available. I'll look it over really well when it gets here and I might decide to move it on down the road if I feel like it's too heavy. But honestly I don't hike where I hunt and I hunt from a big old comfy blind, so generally weight is not a concern for me.

For deer only? I’d go creedmoor. Around here some folks are using a 6.5 for elk, but a good bonded 165g or 180g .308 slug is probably a better choice for most applications. More bullet mass isn’t a negative with varying shot angles.

Got the rifle in and while I was definitely impressed with the quality and the Magpul stock, that thing is heavy! I can't imagine what it will be like once a scope is mounted. So I ended up selling it to a friend.

I think I like the idea of going with the Ruger American Predator and putting it in a Magpul stock. I don't need the heavy contour barrel that the factory American Hunter comes with. That's a bit overkill I think, but I think the American Predator contour will be better for my purposes. Plus the 308 version of the American Predator comes with an 18" barrel which I think I would like a lot more as well.

Like Craig I used a Go Wild for mine. But the slightly shorter 18-in pred would be a cooler option especially if going 308.

Have a 243 win predator in a magpul stock.
Kinda beefy with a 5 round mag and a Bushnell 3x9 on her.
But a good rifle, now that I got rid of the cheapo flimsy original stock.

I have 2 rifles in 6.5 Creedmoor and 5 rifles in 308. I ain't selling the 308's because I like the rifles and the cartridge. But everything the 308 does, the 6.5 CM does better. The 308 can hang with the 6.5 out to 800, maybe 1000 yards, but realistically the 308 starts running out of gas past 800 yards. The 6.5 is still in the game at a mile if you're good enough.

And even at closer ranges of only 200-300 yards every 6.5 I've shot has been more accurate than the best 308 I've ever fired. And with noticeably less recoil.

You can find cheap plinking ammo in 308 more readily and cheaper. But who buys a precision rifle to plink with cheap ammo. For the good stuff 6.5 CM is more readily available and cheaper. Costs a little less to hand load for it too.

For hunting there is a case that can be made that the 308 is a touch better, but the 6.5 CM will kill any animal you'd hunt with a 270 or 308. All 3 of those rounds will take any animal in the lower 48 at ranges farther than most of us can shoot. The 308 doesn't move you into another class of game.

And another vote for buying the Predator.

@LoonWulf, that is a fantastic looking rifle.
I love the color scheme.
Thank you! Ive been stuck on burnt bronze since I got that thing lol.

This is another iteration of the theme....its built otherwise exactly the same as the Magpul except I used a boyds ProV

If weights an issue, im 99% sure that guns actually about a pound lighter than the magpulled version.....ill see if i have pictures of the weights.

I was wrong, i found pictures of a Prov and the magpull off the gun. The magpulls is 3lbs 8oz, the Prov (long action) is 3lbs 4oz
