Ruger Announces New GP100 in 22 Long Rifle

I love my GP, it would sell the gun if it had the trigger of the Smiths. My only conundrum is the availability and price of 22lr. I can shoot my cast wadcutters for about half the price. Once I start seeing it at $.05 per round, I'm sold.

I expect the new GP-100 will have the trigger of a Ruger and not a Smith.

If you like the S&W 617 in the woods, then I see no reason that you wouldn't also like the feel of the 22LR GP-100. I would like to see it offered in a 4" barrel (that's 4.2" to you Ruger).

If I am going to take a walk in the woods with a 22 and do some casual shooting, I'd probably choose my 5" S&W M63. Yeah, I have S&W M17's and M18's; Colt Diamondbacks, Officers Models and so forth.... But I couldn't see buying the new SP-101 in 22LR.

If I am taking a walk in the woods with little intention of shooting, I'll take the LCR-22. I would like to see a LCR 3" in 22LR (with exposed hammer).

617 bait

As CraigC and others have duly noted, we finally have a competitor to Smith's 617. I'm very excited to see my favorite American gun maker put out more new stuff! Wish Colt was half as innovative, then they'd go bankrupt less often. ;) As far as Smith & Wesson, plz add Model 19 to the classics line (snub nose preferred) and drop the Model 10 as there are plenty out there now!

Honestly, I think this gun will out sell the SP-101 in 22LR. There are a lot of shooters that like the GP-100. This one appeals to me even though I don't need it to fill any niche in DA 22's. Got those pretty much filled.

Can they bring back the Model 19 exactly the way it was? I thought the design made it susceptible to flame cutting.

I still think though that the 3" barreled Model 19 Combat Magnum is the most beautiful gun ever made.

S&W will never bring back the 19 exactly the way it was.
Denis

If it was a 4" barrel it would make a GREAT practice piece as a companion for a .357 in the same size. I use a S&W model 18 to practice for the model 19 I normally carry. But model 18s are hard to find and the finish is ugly.

Sturm Ruger stock up 66% this year. 185,000 gun sale background checks on Black Friday alone. 100,000,000 gun sales since Mr. Obama took office.

Of what "declining sales climate" do you speak?

Black Friday certainly didn't have low sales with NICs checks being the highest ever. But, there was a lot of talk about the market declining earlier in the year and expectations of such. As I recall, S&W showed lower profit forcasts for the year than last year. Remington is selling fewer guns. Plus you don't roll out a new caliber in a gun (especially 22) in a month. My guess is that development has been going on for close to a year now.

Despite "lower profit forecasts" stock in Smith & Wesson is up over 100% this year.

Must have been a pretty good sales slump.

Glad to see it, and I'll be on the lookout for the right deal. I had a SP101 in 22LR, wound up selling it off. Didn't care for the trigger, and the grips were too small for my paws.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I miss being able to own a .22lr revolver!

That would be just the thing for the local mink population (invasive species here) which sit a rod length and a bit away when you are fishing. Won't whack'em with a 6ftlb air pistol but I rather suspect a .22lr HP sub would do the job nicely...

I would like to see a LCR 3" in 22LR (with exposed hammer).

I'm with this.

A 3"-4" LCR 22lr with exposed hammer would be considered a modern day 'kit gun' / 'woods gun'. Id be interested in that too.

I'm having a hard time visualizing a large market for a big heavy gun that shoots a relatively hard round to find that has very meager performance.

Particularly when there has been a proven large market for smaller, lighter guns that shoot higher performance rounds that are more available.

And to Ruger, if you want to do something 'innovative' (but that isn't really), bring back the PC9 and more NON-pistol gripped rifles!

I would like it better with some Hogue grips , but I do like it . I might be in the market for one after I hear your reviews .

Full lug, unfluted cylinder. I don't care if it adds weight. If it is more attractive and fun to play with, I care not how much something weighs.

I think the Model 63 is kind of an under-rated gun.

I looked at the .22LR SP101 when I was looking for a .22 revolver and I settled on the Model 63 and I'm glad I did. I really like the trigger on it. It's my daughter's gun and another nice thing about it is that its not too heavy.

Yes there were GP100s chambered in .327 Federal Magnum but the last time I checked they were out of them :)

That was how the first LCRx in .38 Spec. was being marketed, but I don't see a .38 as a "kit gun."

When the .327 first hit the scene Ruger was making GP's chambered for them. They stopped producing them years ago due to low sales and I doubt they'll make a comeback.

Dimension needed for the 10 shot GP100

If anyone can get me the cylinder array diameter I can get started on developing a speed loader for it.

It may be the same as a .357 assuming the frame is the same. (I don't have a GP100 .357 to measure)

(Use a caliper on 2 opposing holes, measure both small and large spans of the holes, add the 2 together then divide by 2)

I'm guessing close to .990" like the large frame Taurus. I asked Ruger and they couldn't give it to me.
