Ruger Hawkeye

Howdy,

I have been checking out the site the last few days while researching rifles. There is a lot of information here. I have a newborn son and I am in the market for a rifle for him. I am going to buy him a .243. I bought my oldest son a .22-250 in the Savage. This gun is a tackdriver but it has an internal magazine that I do not like. I went to basspro today and found the savage classic and a ruger hawkeye. The ruger was a beautiful gun but I have not heard much about their accuracy. Does anyone here use one of these guns? If so how is the accuracy? I use factory ammo and I only target shoot to sight in a rifle. I plan on putting a Nikon Prostaff on the gun. I do not want to spent more than 600 bucks for a rifle and rings so my options are limited This gun is going to be used for hunting and a keep sake for years to come. I am leaning towards the savage but I look forward to hearing the firsthand experiences from Ruger users. I have a Ruger .22 and it is a great gun. Thanks in advance for the help.

I will tell you next week. My father just bought a M77 Hawkeye in 30.06 and we are just waiting for his scope to come in and we are going to go sight it in. I here they are as accurate as the next hunting rifle.

I've got a handfull of Rugers and they all shoot pretty well. All of their triggers are terrible though, or were.

Just bought a Hawkeye in .204 and the trigger is supposed to be allot better, but it's still heavy and I'll be looking to lighten it up.

Haven't shot it yet, so no comments on it's accuracy. Rugers do come with the rings, so that saves 30-50.00 bucks right there. I paid 435.00 NIB for mine, but it was on a clearance type of deal. Think 550-600.00 is closer to the going rate.

Yeah my father just paid $600 for his 30.06 Hawkeye. But it does come with rings which is nice.

Basspro had the 243 in stock and it was 599. Our local stores are pretty cleaned out of rifles right now. I cannot find the Savage here locally and I may pick it up online.

Buy the Ruger. I have two M77 Mark IIs and they are very accurate.

I had a hawkeye in 223. Sold it and bought a Tikka T3 lite in 243. Could not be happier.

I have a Hawkeye in .22-250 and it's a shooter. It is a well crafted gun and it has collected several coyotes. I think one in .243 would be a nice addition. Rock solid scope mounts and accurate as well.

A stainless Hawkeye in .243 Win would be a great do-anything last-forever rifle. Like everything Ruger it's built like a tank. Your son has an awsome dad. Remember, if you need higher, lower, blue, stainless, or 30mm rings you can send the ones that come with the rifle back to Ruger and they will exchange them for free. Actually, call them first, they'll send you the rings you want along with a self addressed postage paid envelope to return the orignial rings.

I found a pretty good deal on a Savage. If it is there Friday I am going to get it. If not ill go back and get that Ruger. It appears most new rifles are pretty good shooters. Thanks for the input.

How are the Hawkeye's different than the Mark 2's? I looked at the Ruger site but didn't really see much different between the two.

Hey grouse,

If you like the Hawkeye, take a look at the Ruger KM77 VT MKII, after reading your statement about target shooting. This rifle is as true a target rifle that you can get straight from the box.

Hammer forged medium heavy bbl,Mauser claw type non-rotating extractor, controlled round feed , 3 position saftey, internal mag but has hinged floor plate, true target style 3 way adjustable trigger, all in a matte stainless steel with great laminated, stock with beavertail fore arm, and configured with almost straight drop for set up with modern scopes, with swivel studs and factory scope rings.

The one I own in .308 Win cal. with custom handloads shot a 3/4" 5 shot grouping that looked like a 5 on a dice. It has never failed to shoot at least 1@100yds if I did my part.

I really get off on the Hawkeye too, and would like to own one in a .25 cal or 6mm, for hunting deer.
