For years I have bought Ruger products and have recommended them to my friends and colleagues. However, after my experience today, I may stop.

My LCP is on it's third take down pin, the other two pins' heads were sheared off by the slide while practicing. Ruger sent me a third one, free of charge. So today I go to the range to retest the gun with the new pin. On the 7th round (Hornady Critical Defense) the entire upper portion of the slide "explodes", at least that's how it appeared!

The whole slide flew off and I could see the slide go to the right and the recoil spring and guide rod go to the left. I was able to retrieve my parts and put the gun back together. The new slide pin was not staying in the hole but slides out freely. So it appears the slide pin spring is bad.

So, naturally I call Ruger. I was kindly informed that since my gun was manufactured in 2008 that it was below the "cut off" for them to send me a shipping label. I would have to pay my own shipping overnight UPS or Fed Ex. As we know, that is NOT cheap! I had never heard that before. I explained that these issues I am having are manufacturing issues, but I made no headway. I requested the manger to call me back, but have not heard from him.

Anyone else have this problem with Ruger?? Anyone got any other contact information with whom I can address this problem?

Sorry, for your bad experience Ruger. I have not purchased new firearm from them in 8+ years, as I kept having problems with their products - from the famous 10/22 to the Sp 101 to the Vaquero to the Blackhawks. I will buy used Ruger but nothing new from them.

It's kind of crummy to make you pay shipping, but not uncommon with other gun manufacturers. The important thing is that they actually take a look at it and fix it instead of just guessing at the problem over the phone and sending you parts.

Sorry for the trouble. I really like S&W's customer service better. It isn't fun to have to cough up the next day air carrier costs. I haven't investigated it myself, but gunbroker.com has a group shipping discount with FedEx that you can sign up for. You need to have a gunbroker account, and then you need to sign up for the shipping thing separately. You need to register some bank info with them, but they claim up to 30% discounts.

Maybe someone here has some experience with it.

I agree with one ounce,
If you bought the gun from your LGS they should send it back on the cheap or no cost for you. As far as your customer service interaction goes I would call back and explain the whole situation to a manager/supervisor. Sounds like you got a new or grumpy CS rep.

Sounds like the problem maybe more thN just the pin. You should have sent the whole gun in to them the first time, so they can make sure everything else in spec. Just pay the shipping. It's less than that $28.00 box of Hornaday Critical Dedense you were using for practice. Sorry about your bad luck.

I also agree with one ounce. That is why I will pay a little more for a gun at the LGS. My LGS is thankful for the business and is very helpful in times like you are experiencing.:)

Sad to see years of pleasure with Rugers products all ruined by one figment of displeasure.

That is how it goes I suppose though.

The gun was made in 2008 and is on it's third pin. It's time for you to start to pay for shipping costs.

Sounds like it's more than just the pin. The gun is three years old, they have already sent you three free replacement pins. Bite the bullet and send it in. If they find it to be a manufacturing defect, they'll probably reimburse you for shipping.

And this is the way Ruger thinks as well. Also the reason I prefer to buy Springfield, Kahr, S&W etc........companies that back-up their products.

I have been played this way by Ruger several times in the past.........

JMOfartO:

In my experience, (over 50 years) the ONLY firearms manufacturer that I know of that pays shipping both ways is Smith & Wesson.

Not saying others won't do it, just that I've never personally found one that would, (other than S&W) including Beretta, KelTec, Colt, H&K, Charter Arms, High Standard, etc..

Only S&W....

In fact last week I had to send my FS22 Firestorm back to the authorized factory repair facility for extractor problems and I had to pay the shipping.. Hey, it was less than $20.00.

I've had Rugers of one kind or another (rimfire pistols/revolvers/rifles) and "so far" never had a bad one in the batch..

We still have a Ruger Single-Six Convertible , Security 6, 3 LCP's and nary a problem (so far) between 'em)

It is my intention, after shooting a friends LC9 to buy one of those suckers as soon as the money in wallet and the price of the very desirable, and in somewhat short in supply, LC9 match..

IMOFO having to pay one way shipping to get free warranty work on a defective firearm is fair enough, UNLESS the defective firearm is new and had a problem from the get-go..

No offense,

jesse

Ruger emailed me a printable UPS ship label and instructions for returning my defective LCP.

That could just be because it's only a couple of months old, and has been malfunctioning from the beginning. I wonder what that "cutoff" is.

lc:

I'm guessing 12 months...

I believe most firearm manufacturers warranty is ONLY for a year, but others have lifetime warranty's for FACTORY defects, so I'm betting any problems within the first year of purchase would get you an r/a at no expense to you.

Of course anyone not happy with Ruger because of a warranty issue should just sell their Ruger pistol/revolver/whatever, and buy a HiPoint..

HiPoints are warranted for life, forever, 1st or 4000th owner, no questions asked. :what:

I actually have a HiPoint 995 Carbine I bought new a couple of years ago for, I think, about $150.00.. I can't make that ugly sucker malfunction..:banghead:

And, I put a cheap red dot scope on it, and it's surprisingly accurate, always reliable, and in 9MM makes a nice "companion" to all of my 9MM pistols.

Go figure?

Best Wishes,

Jesse

My experience with Ruger handguns is somewhat limited but I think they make fine firearms. My P97DC, bought new many years ago, continues to work flawlessly after thousands of rounds fired. Not a single FTE or FTF or any other problem whatsoever. My Ruger LCP has also been flawless, although I have not fired nearly as many rounds as I have through the P97. When the LCP recall started, I contacted Ruger, they sent me the shipping box, and then two weeks later I had the gun back with the free extra mag. It has worked without any problems and I was very impressed with their service. Every time I think about getting a 1911, two things occur to me: first, do I need to spend $1,000, and second, what would a 1911 do that my P97 cannot do and do well? I might add a Glock 21 but that would primarily be to get the higher capacity mag. Overall I think Ruger is a quality and reasonably priced gun manufacturer.

Find a local gun store that will ship your gun for a processing fee. I recently had to do this when I sold a handgun to an out of state buyer, they shipped it to an out of state FFL for $20 + shipping which was $15. That was less than half of what it would have cost for me to ship it myself via UPS/FedEx. I think $35 for a repaired gun is pretty good considering Ruger will repair/replace and ship it back on their dime. Ruger doesn't provide a legally enforceable warranty on their products. That said, I own a couple of Rugers and they have been fantastic guns, and their customer service department has treated me well.

rogertc1-Exactly.Everyone thinks Taurus is the only gun that
breaks.They all do.They're man made.
Sloman-When a gun explodes like that,the manufacturer
should take it very seriously. The price of them paying
the shipping could be peanuts compared to a law suit if
someone had of gotten hurt by the gun exploding like that.
Sometimes I wonder where they get these costumer service people.
Wake up Ruger and give this man a new gun.
