Hi all,

I will keep this as short as possible. I tried posting in the Revolvers section with no luck and am hoping I'll get more input here.

Short question: Does anyone know if the lcr that ships from the factory with an XS dot has a different rear notch dimension (height wise)?

Second question: If anyone has a 38 lcr that came with the ramp sight and can look at the pic (post #2 below) and tell me which one resembles your gun most closely that would also help, a lot. The 22 with the higher notch sights is on the right. (Ignore the sharpie marks on the 38 on the left.)

Long explanation: I stupidly purchased this version even though I don't like Big Dots AT ALL, figured it might be different on a wheel gun, but sadly no. I have changed it out for a Hiviz FO sight which I love, but have noticed the notch is too shallow to see the entire dot.

Further, comparing the profile of the 38 special notch to my lcr22 revolver, the lcr22 definitely has a deeper notch (pic attached). HOWEVER the lcr22 front post isn't interchangeable anyway so this doesn't tell me anything for sure.

I would very much like a deeper notch (like 0.07 deeper, just a subtle change) to be able to get a good view of the green fiber optic dot with the blade of the sight even with the top of the rear notch edges. I'm assuming this is how it's intended to be used, as the oem ramp sight on my lcr22 is held even with the notch rear sights.

Third possibility... I am way off base and the lcr38 sight picture is supposed to be "ramp over notch sights" unlike the 22lr, irrespective of xs dots?

Finally... If I want to gently make the rear notch deeper what's the best way to refinish that area?

I will have to look at my LCR22 to check for the "hump".

one thing that bothered me with Ruger was their shop ruger web sight. when I went to shop for a front sight replacement they had a disclaimer that the sight they offered would make the LCR22 shoot about 5" low at 15 feet or so... this graduates as the range increases...

basically you are stuck with no viable front sight replacement on their .22lr.

I shot the Hiviz sights today out to about 10 yds and also ran a drill I like a lot called the 12 shot drill by Claude Werner.

Turns out the sight picture is the same as it would be with my 22 lcr, ie align the top of the ramp with the top of either side of the rear u notch, and it shoots to the point of aim in the center of the ramp (in this case the fiber optic dot).

I'm going to strongly consider deepening out the shallow rear notch by about 0.06 or 0.07 to be able to see the fiber optic dot fully when the sights are properly aligned. The way the sights are milled it won't be hard because oddly, the notch is shallower toward the back.

The other option would be to reduce the size of the dot slightly so it fits properly in the vertical visual space of the notch.

Anyone with any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Is that section of the frame clad in polymer? If so, you should be able to 'build' any sight you wish in the same way Glock grips mods are performed.

Good point, thanks. It does appear to be. Not sure how deep it goes but today is the day I get the calipers out and compare the rear notch on the 22 (good) vs the 38 (inadequate).

Ruger's website lists all the .22 LCRs as having pinned replaceable front sights. I can only address the .38 model personally, and this is true, but the post to which the front sight attaches varies in hole location between individual guns, so a pre-drilled replacement ramp may not fit. You may have to use a blank one and drill it yourself, or glue it on.

For anyone curious or just confused by this thread in general I'll post an update.

I did call customer service and they stated there isn't a difference in "depth" of rear sight notch.

I've solved the issue by going to a factory ramp on the 38 which is what I use on the 22lr. Painted bright orange, it's the best option I've found. The XS dot doesn't work well for my shooting style and the Hiviz fiber optic sights pretty much sucked because only half of the fiber optic dot was visible with the sight aligned properly (which incidentally is why I posted this thread!).
