Ruger LCR trouble and service

Ruger called me this morning saying they will send out UPS to pick up my gun. Apparently some of the service reps are new and didn't know they would pick up the shipping fees for such a case as this. I'll update on what happens with the LCR.

This is pathetic customer service, especially for a repeat buyer!

Most shops don't deal with the manufacturer; they order through distributors, and they are able to return defective merchandise to those distributors as well, espcially for exchange. It costs the shop nothing to do this.

Another thought: Did you pay for the Ruger with a credit card? If so, the card issuer will probably have a guarantee policy that will require the gun shop to chase them for their money.

[Edit] Oops; didn't see Page 2!

Glad to see Ruger is taking care of you. Good luck!

I just sent in my new 686-6 4" for repair do to timing issues and the trigger not returning all the way. They paid for my shipping there and back and I had it within two weeks. The gun is perfect now. Every chamber locks up well before the hammer is fully cocked and the trigger is smooth as a baby's butt. This was my first experience with SW.

Aedrick,

My wife bought a LCR for carry and so far 2 boxes of ammo without any problems.

@ 25 yds standing, she kept them all in the 5 ring! Nice impressive gun IMHO.

Hope you get yours fixed and enjoy it. As we enjoy her's bigtime.

It's nice when you have confidence that your wife can hit the 5's at 25 yds standing with such a small gun.

(you should see her shoot my Sig p226!)

Good luck keep us advised.

What were ya'll talkin' about, again? Taurus? Oh, no, Taurus covers shipping both ways first year after purchase, can't be Taurus...........:neener:

What I like about Ruger is that if it's nothing big, they'll just send you the part. Broke my P90s mag release spring, called 'em, 2 days later, had a spring in the mailbox for free. That gun is 18 years old. :D Actually, that's the only Ruger service I've dealt with and I own 6 of their handguns and sold two I had. All the ones I have now I've had for over a decade.

I bought too many Ruger revolvers, SA & DA, that had rough pawl channels, etc, and burr-filled drilled holes. I just knew that whatever new Ruger I bought, I would be the 'final inspector' - and 'adjuster'. My early .454 SRH was the closest to 'right'. I finally had enough - it was the .32 H&RM SP-101 and SSM with their oversized chambers that did it. Before then, I had bought one new Ruger - a 5.5" RH in .45 Colt - ordered locally along with a friend's similar example - that I couldn't fix and declared a 'return' choice. Mine had burst casting bubbles between the cylinder exit bores - not awe-inspiring for it's much heralded 'strength'.

I called Ruger - a toll call, BTW - they said, after getting that s/n, they wanted that one back - and sent a pre-paid label for it. My friend picked his up the next day - and it was back to NH within days of mine. My RH got another new cylinder, hammer, trigger, and internal parts - and a lightened trigger - for my troubles. On it's one month since purchase anniversary, I was shooting it at the range. My friend's had a warped frame - he got another new RH, which he promptly traded. That was 0 for 2 examples. Like me, he had a S&W 625MG in .45 Colt - and was spoiled. Mine worked, but I eventually sold it - after getting a second MG.

S&W has sent me an ejector rod and spring, gratis, over the years. They did send a pickup for my 4" 625-8, bought new 9/02, in 6/04. I had likely put 10k-11k+ rounds of ball ammo through it as my first SPC competition revolver. I often didn't tighten the yoke screw enough - it even fell out - along with the cylinder - twice. I found that screw in the gravel several times! The b/c gap was uneven and tight. I told S&W about my use - they said it was 'covered' - and sent a label. I had it back eight days later - perfect - gratis! I even sent them my blown-up (All my fault!) 629MG - in a body bag - and they, knowing I had only shot only my homebrews in it, sold me a new one for < half the best price I'd ever seen for one. My new UDR 2 5/8" PC627 recently came with poor-fitting Eagle boot grips - they sent a FEDEX Ground label for them! All of the S&W calls are via their 800#. Their trigger job quotes, etc, even include overrnite both ways - to/from your home. Good folks.

BTW, I have shot two different LCRs - with GA Arms +P 158gr LHPSWCs, ballistically equivalent to the similar Remingtons I 'carry' - just < half the price. I also shot 130gr MC plinkers. Both sounded and felt like they were 'coming apart' when they were fired - rattled empty. The +P's recoil was heavier than in the 642, too. The triggers were lighter than I remember my 642 being when it was new. My much-used 642 is now smoother - and maybe a teeny bit lighter - than the LCR, despite no trigger work or spring changes. IMHO, the 642 is an improvement over the LCR - and certainly worth a few bucks more. A 'new design' isn't always better. Of course, I divested myself or Ruger handguns - except for my BP c&b Old Army - so I am biased. Good luck with your LCR... I know a guy who replaced his old/worn out (from carrying!) 642 with one. I'll bet S&W would return his 642 to LN - he didn't know that!

UPDATE 5/18/2010: I just received my Ruger LCR from Ruger factory. It came with a note saying the cylinder, hammer, trigger, ejector, internal components and firing pin were replaced. The gun works fine now, and hopefully it won't have any more problems.

Took the LCR apart and promptly lost the cylinder latch spring. Couldn't find it anywhere probably down in the carpet somewhere. Called Ruger and asked for a price for a new one. They said uh-uh send it in. I said how much to repair, they said $60. Durnit.

2 weeks later it arrives back home. No charge. And it is (wait for it) a brand new gun.

Amazing.

Was fitting new grips to the daughter's Taurus 85UL. Took it to the range, and noticed keyholes in the target. Took it home for cleaning, and found a transverse crack the length of the barrel (purchased used, previous owner probably shot a lot of P+ which it isn't rated for). Sent it in to Taurus, waited 5 weeks and it returned with both new barrel and frame, no charge. Shoots great.

Every company has their duds, the question is what do they do about it.
