Ruger Lever Action

What do you want to know?
Are they reliable? Yes.
Are they accurate? As a 150 meter hunting rifle, more than neccessary.
Do they feed lead or jacketed bullets? Yes, better than the semi-auto Rugers in this caliber.
Are spare magazines available? Yes, and they are common and inexpensive.
Will the rifle feed .44 Specials? Ruger says no, but some rifles will feed and function with Specials, depends on the magazine and feed geometry.

Short throw lever, cocking indicator, you must open the action before you can change or insert a new magazine and this limits the rifle to four shots, you can't top the chamber and insert a full magazine.

Anything else you want to know?

I've yet to actually see a Ruger lever action or for that matter a deerfield (.44mg semiauto). I wonder if the lever and semi use the same magazines?

I love the Ruger levers. I believe that they are the nicest lever's being made today by anyone, from the standpoint of functionality. I also think they are the ugliest, and I have said so many, many times. I am a huge Ruger fan, and by god, that gun works like a dream, but it is not an attractive firearm.

Used to have one. Handy, reliable, short, lightweight, powerful little carbine that handled like an extension of my body. It was pretty accurate; at 50-yards I could print clover-leafs without much trouble, sitting. It is the only lever action I've ever seen that I prefered the looks of WITH a scope mounted.

You CAN load one in the chamber and insert a fully loaded magazine. The lever doesn't have to be dropped all of the way; press the mag release really firmly and it opens the bolt enough to allow the mags in and out.

Got rid of mine though, because of one tiny little problem I had. The LOP was too danged short! I got clobbered by the scope more times than I care to remember. It also pinched my shoulder upon firing, with that lousy curved buttplate. Even with a 1" recoil pad installed, it still felt too much like a 10/22 for me.

I've got a Marlin now, with a reciever sight. I like the Marlin better, but wouldn't cry too long if tomorrow I was told I had to get rid of it for a Ruger.

Interesting to read this feedback. I'm not sure I've ever seen an actual Ruger levergun on the shelves. Sounds like they are solid guns. I'd miss the "top-off" ability of a tube-mag levergun like my Marlin 1894, though.

Judging by the catalog pics, I agree, the Ruger lever design ain't pretty (and I like the visuals of most Rugers -- even the Super Redhawk).
