ruger m77 safety question

hello everyone,

this is my first post on these forums. here it goes. i know that this is probably something simple, but i can't find any info on this.

i recently purchased a ruger M77 in 7mm RM. keep in mind that this is not a m77 mkII. this is a rifle that was made in 1977. it's only had about 60 rounds put through it when i bought it. i've been looking at replacing the stock on this rifle. everything i've been finding is for a "tang" safety.

Question #1: what the heck is the "tang" safety? (mine has what i consider to be a standard safety, simple forward and backward "switch" for fire and safe"
Question #2: will a tang safety stock work for what i have? better question yet is" is the safety switch i have considered a "tang" safety?

It's called a tang safety because of the location of the safety-on the tang. I HIGHLY prefer the older tang safety model over the newer mk2 due to it being MUCH handier for me to manipulate-it lies directly under the natural position of the thumb when gripping the rifle in natural way. That way I don't have to move my thumb off the tang, all the way to right side, to operate the safety.

As above guy said, you have a tang safety, as opposed to the 3 position winchester type. Both have their merits.

I don't think the tang safety stocks are compatible to the modern receivers without a little woodwork.

My M77 is the newer, and stalkingbear is right. When I've taken animals with it, I had to stop and look down at the gun, find the safety and switch it off rather than doing it blind. My thumb just doesn't belong on that side of the bolt. But I still love that gun.

I searched Cabela's as a baseline:
Here's a B&C replacement stock for the M77. They also have M77 MkII ("3 position safety") stocks.
Its about $170 or so...There is a note on this particular stock that your magnum caliber will need "an extra recoil lug installation".

Its on my list, but I'd rather have a Hogue.

i'm actually trying to find a new stock with a thumbhole. i find them to be VERY comfortable. but thanks all it was kinda getting confusing for a second there. all the talk of the safety and no pictures or illustrations to help a visual guy like me!

this might be a little off the beaten path but still of interest to you. there was a problem with the bolts on some of the ruger m77. not sure what it was but it was listed on their web site. if the bolt had been fixed by ruger it would have a T scribed into it. they offerd this service for a wile and i think it is still available. i own a m77 in 243 win and it has a t inscribed under the bolt handle.

i looked up the problem on rugers web site. it is not a problem with the bolt but the over travel adjustment screw. the rifle can sometimes fire without pulling the trigger using the older style screw. the still offer the replacement. just download the coupon from their website
