I posted this question a while back but maybe someone new can give me an answer. I am wondering what year Ruger changed their tang safety. On older m77s the bolt will only open w the tang in the fire position, with my more recent 77s the bolt will open in either the safe or fire position on the tang safety. I am wondering when and why this changed. I prefer the older style myself and info on the year will help with future purchases of m77 tangs. I appreciate any input, thanx Lunker77.

Hi, friend.

Go to your other thread here http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=617567
They gave you the resource to look up yourself, but maybe that wasn't clear.

Go down to post #3 and click the link.
Open up the Rifle section.
Then click on the Model 77 lines, all of them.
The tang safety are Out Of Production, two different series of them.
The Mark II line is currently in production, without tang safety.

You can see on the web site the two series of tang-safety models.
That explains the two different functions.

Why did they do that? Perhaps call or email them and ask.
Often we find that there was more than one reason.
In this case, perhaps there was a market demand.
Perhaps they recognized a safety issue.
Perhaps it was a production matter related to the new Mark II.
Perhaps all of these together.

Hard for us to guess, but Ruger will probably tell you.

Sometime around 92 they came out with the Mark II that had the side safety.
We have several tang safety rifles several Mark II's. Either is capable of sub moa performance. The Mark II trigger is likely to be worse and un adjustable though a gunsmith or careful person can work on it. The Mark II rifles may need the barrel floated as well. Did the above and glass bed mine and it shoots about any decent handload into small groups. The tang rifles were better out of the box to me.
