is the ruger m77 with the tang safety a better gun than the new models? and how much should i expect to pay for a tang safety model thats in about 85 percent condition? and a markII in the same condition
I can't say if they are better, but my 77RSI is a good rifle. I actually like the tang safety better than any of the shround mounted safeties.
In the early days of the model 77 the quality seemed to be hit or miss on the barrels, Ruger used to outsource to the cheapest supplier it's said, and that hurt their accuracy reputation for a long time.
I grew up shooting my father's tang safety Ruger and then went out and bought a shroud mounted safety model (Mrk II). I don't have a preference one way or the other. They both work. I do like the three position aspect of the shroud mounted model. I don't believe the tang safety is three position.
As for a price, go to the local Barnes and Noble/Borders/Whatever bookstore and look it up in the gun values Blue book (If I had to guess I would probably say around $350 to $400, but don't quote me on that).
Good luck, Ruger rifles are great.
Most of my 77s are the older tang mount which I can take or leave. The new models are like the winchester 3 position safety, a good set up. Ihave bought a bunch of them for $250 but lately $325 is about the best deal you can find. The last I bought was a 30-06 with 3x9 leupold scope for $350 a well built gun in both styles but most need some attention to the trigger.
