Went to the gunshow this afternoon and bought a new holster for my new Buckmark, while I was there saw some pretty nifty pistol grips so I got some faux Ivory for my Ruger Mark I.

Note: my Ruger which has 4" tapered barrel, was purchased about 1973, does not say anything on the barrel such as Mark I,II, or III obviously. Just says the usual stuff "22 Long Rifle, read owners manual etc along with the serial number".

So presuming it was a Mark I, purchased the afore mentioned grips only to get home and finding out the screw holes were to short. Back to the gunshow, this time I took the pistol with me. Finally got it fitted and found out the Mark II grips fit perfect. What gives here? Any help would be appreciated, as I've got two magazines that fit and function in this handgun very well, however if I ever need another which do I get?

Incidentally they were all out of the faux Ivory so I got tiger striped walnut grips that look really good also.

IIRC there was a change in production to the Ruger Standard in 1971. The grip screw locations was one of the changes.

Googlefoo turned up this frim Wiki.

"In 1971, one of the few engineering changes ever made to the Standard model took place when the original 22 year old receiver forming dies wore out"

The Ruger .22 automatic pistol started with the Standard Model, hunter and plinker version.

The MK I was the target version of the Standard Model.

The next major revision (bolt hold open, 10 shot mag) was called the MK II in both standard and target flavors.

Then the 22/45 was added to the line.

Then the MK III series replaced the MK II series.

Again I thank ya ID, and a thank ya goes out to Carl Brown for that History lesson. I do appreciate it, Afterall who said "ya can't teach an old dog new tricks".:D
