Anyone have any experience with a Ruger Mark II mounted with a Red Dot Scope? I've been giving this a thought by using a Aim Tech mount and a Simmons Red Dot as a new squirrel hunting setup instead of my tricked out Ruger 10/22.

I bought a MKII with the 5 1/2" bull barrel setup with the SoLow mount and a Tasco red dot. I have not spent too much time shooting it, but used to let a friend use it when we went to the range. He loved it and wanted to buy it. He kept them in the 10 ring of a B27 target at 25 yards.

Used for bowling pin competitions for a few years. They are very fun, it's cool to shoot fast and hit what you're looking at.

Plus, it got me used to shooting with both eyes open.

this one belongs to my 11 y/o

pawnshop ruger, ebay tasco accudot, solow mount, hogue grips, you shoulda seen the look on his face! gave this to my son for his 11th birthday (17mar).
spent the day at the range with him. he sighted it in. happy birthday! :D

Used it for years

I have had a Red Dot on my Mark II 512 Bull Barrel for over 20 years. I bought a no-gunsmith mount that had a dovetail that replaced the rear site. I also put an inexpensive set of wooden target grips that you used to be able to find in the classified section of Guns and Ammo and had a target trigger installed. It is a really accurate set-up and alot of fun. I use it to teach non-shooters how to handle a pistol.

I have a 40mm BSA on my Ruger Gov't Target 7.5" bull barrel. I put it on there last year. I love it, it's so much fun to target shoot, and it's a real snap to sight in.

However, getting the dovetail sight off was a real PITA! You gotta pound the snot out of it, and not mar the gun while doing so.

All the newer MkII Government Competition models come pre-tapped and with a Ruger rail that doesn't require rear sight removal (I bought mine used w/o the Ruger rail).

Make sure you go the correct direction, it is tapered and one way will actually make it tighter ;)

Even after loosening the set screw? Odd...

I had a Stainless 512 with an UltraDot and SoLow mounts. Simply awesome.

I've used Mk IIs with an Ultradot as my bullseye .22 pistols for many years. The current version is a 5-1/2 bull barrel with a 1-inch sight. I had the receiver grooved so the sight would install without any mount at all.

My 22/45 is outfitted with a Weigand base and 1" Target Sport (cheap) red dot sight. It's been a great combination for accurate small game hunting out to 50 yards, so I am pleased with the setup.

If I put a match trigger/sear/hammer in the gun it would be a real paper shooter, the stock Ruger triggers just dont do justice to the MkII or 22/45 once you attach a scope or red dot sight to it.

How well do the fronts of the Weigand and SoLow mounts stay in place? It just seems to me that at least with the Weigand that it would be wiggly.

Weigand Mount,

The first time I installed the Weigand mount I did have an issue with movement, but this was my fault not in the design of the mount. I was in a hurry to get to the range and sight in for the next days squirrel hunt and didnt have any blue thread lock compound for the dovetail insert screws. I just tightened it down, added the mount and put a BSA RD30 dot sight on the pistol.

Fired about 250 rounds, went home and did a quick wipe down and got things ready for the hunt. Next day I missed every shot I took, stoped back by the range and it was hitting all over the place. Yep, insert screws had worked loose because I didnt add thread lock.

I have since installed the mount correctly, Weigand instructions includes adding thread lock to the insert screws and base screws. No more problems and its deadly accurate with the cheap 1" Target Sport sight.

Gret Post.

This is very timely for me. Not even two weeks ago, I took the wife to range. She has a stock Mk II with the 6 7/8 inch barrel. There was a nice gentleman there shooting a Mk II wit ha trigger job and a red dot scope. He let my wife try it, and she fell IN LOVE!

The good news is, I got permission(ordered actually) to spend money to mount a scope and get nicer grips on her Mk II. Now I just need to study this thread to learn how ot do it.
