Hello THR,

My Dad recently gave me a rifle and I'm trying to get some information about it.

Here is what I do know:

It's a Ruger number 1 in .223 Remington, blued finish, with wood stock (walnut?)

It's got a 24 inch heavy contour barrel

My Dad bought it new in the early 2000s, looked up the serial number on the Ruger website, it looks like it was made sometime in 2000 or 2001

What I'd like to know:

Biggest question I have is what is the rifling twist rate on these things? I'm trying to figure out what bullet weight would work best in this rifle.

Also, I'm curious what it's worth. I have no intention of selling it, I really want to shoot it, and it was a gift. But I am curious.

Can anybody ID the scope? (see attached photo). I don't see a brand name or anything listed on it. It says it's a 6-24X50 AO (adjustable objective I assume) and it says made in china. I'll probably end up replacing it with something else at some point.

Blue Book will have it.
However, from what I've seen, Red pad models seem favored over black.
And around here, B models over V.

Pretty rifles, the better the wood the more they fetch.

So prices can vary quite a bit.

Like was said above they can vary in price. However they are decently expensive rifles and hold their value well. They can sometimes take some tweaking to get to shoot well. Usually has to do with the forend stock. They are one of my favorite rifles.

Call Ruger customer service and they can tell you the twist rate. Scope is probably not worth anything. Looks like the scope base is aftermarket as well.

Yes, it did. Same rings, different factory base. Your rifle is a Standard which comes with the quarter rib used on most models. The OP's is a Varminter, which comes with bases mounted on the barrel.
What he said.

Correct about factory bases being mounted on the barrel of the varmint weight #1. Twist rate of my #1 .223 is 1/10.5". Accuracy has been fine with every bullet weight I've loaded for it, ranging from 40 to 55 grains.
