I'm torn right now between a BRNO/CZ ZKK 602 in .375 and a Ruger No. 1A from about 1999 in 7x57. I really like both rifles, but I've had two NO. 1's that turned out to be less than idea shall we say. Hit minute of pie plate. And I've had a CZ 550 in 7x57 that wouldn't shoot well. Just bad luck I guess.

Part of me wants to get the ZKK for bear defense, but I'm not a big fan of noise and recoil. Plus I already have a Mossberg 500 and assorted semis that can be used to rain led down on any bruin messing with the dogs. For what I plan on hunting in the next few years, the No. 1 should be fine--Moose and black bear are the biggest creatures on the menu.

Both rifles are about $600. I suspect the ZKK would hold its value better, but it just doesn't have the same appeal to me as a shooter. I know it's gonna hurt to shoot, both my shoudler and my wallet. I'm the kind of shooter who likes to fire thousands of rounds downrange--not just half a box. I've got tons of 7x57 reloading supplies and good powder, so secondary costs are much less with the No. 1. Both would remain unscoped.

What say you?

I ended up with "none of the above." I waited too long on the ZKK and it was gone. So I opted for a new CZ 550 in .375 H&H. I'm not overly fond of the stock's balance, but an inch off the end and perhaps a bit removed around the neck will solve that problem. The magnum-size CZ action is really hard to criticize.

The Ruger, I reasoned, will make a nice mountain rifle whenever it is I have enough time to go running around mountains again. For now I need something that can kill a brownie.
