This is the second episode in a six-part series where we test both projectiles and powder in a pair of Ruger Old Army cap and ball revolvers. In the series we'll test three different projectiles, round balls, standard conical bullets and Kaido's heavy hunting conicals using both Goex black powder and Hodgdon's Triple-7 substitute black powder. We'll shoot everything through a pair of Ruger Old Army revolvers, one with a five and a half inch barrel and the other with a seven and a half inch barrel. We'll test each load for accuracy, velocity, energy and penetration. In this episode we'll be testing round balls and Hodgdon's Triple-7 substitute black powder.

I'm enjoying the series. Even the photogenic stinkbug crawling up your back when you were testing the velocity of the 7 1/2 incher.:D

Keep up the good work.

Roger

Once again Mike, thanx for your time and info.

I too noticed that stink bug and i also noticed that it stopped dead in it's tracks when yer OA went off.
Tells me that you discovered that i need to be shootin my stink bugs with one o' my ROA's .:D

5 grains of BP and some cornmeal and a piece of paper towel makes a mighty fine "bug load" for use in the kitchen. Great on flies, wasps, and japanese beetles!

I noticed on the 7-1/2" ROA that it has a Bisley hammer. Is that from Clement?

Hahaha......i'll just stick with automotive brake cleaner for the indoor bugs.Kills 'em on contact and leaves no 'parts' or residue. ;)
Now as far as out door bugs go.......thanx for the info :D

Thanks Mike. :)
It's interesting that loads of 777 having ~10% less volume than Goex will produce ~25% - 30% more velocity than Goex.
That's quite a difference in power level.

Rojello, the guns are on loan from Rowdy Yates. I don't know who made what...sorry

Articap, one thing I've seen over the years is that B-P velocity results can vary quite a bit from day to day, depending on temperature, humidity, and for all I know, phase of the moon. I did the Round ball B-P velocity test and the T-7 velocity test three weeks apart. If I'd done them the same day the results may have been different.

This test took a long time to perform...not to mention several truckloads of water jugs. And since it stretched from late September to mid-October, weather conditions changed quite a bit from one shooting session to another.

I hope you don't think I'm hijacking the thread. I just needed to show how into ROA's I am.

Rowdy Yates also did the tune up on on mine. Action job, opened up and trued forcing cone. It has Clements Bisley hammer, Power Custom stainless Colt gripframe, the latest Classicballistx cylinder which is really, really well done, Banana River ram, Paul Persinger blind screw grips, beveled front site blade, shimmed hammer and trigger, Treso nipples...and likely more. I shoot the heck out of it and clean it in the dishwasher.
My favorite load is 40gr of Triple 7 (the Classicballistx holds more) with a 210 gr BigLube HP bullets and RWS 1075 plus caps. I always load it using D/D loader. It just makes life easier. The ROA lets me load all 6 chambers safely...so I do.

It's stupid accurate. The target is at a measured 25 yards.
