Ruger or Colt?

Hey guys.

I'm mulling over my new AR purchase, coming up at the end of January here.

So far I've narrowed the contenders down to a NIB Ruger SR-556, which I can have for about $1550, or a NIB Colt LE6290 for around $1300. If I get the Colt, though, it'll end up wearing a KAC RAS foreend, which will add another $300 to the price, so really they'll both end up costing around the same.

My problem is, I really, really, really like the SR-556. I like how it shoots, I like the gas system, and I really like how easy it is to clean. (Pop pin, run boresnake through it, wipe down bolt/carrier and piston/regulator, put it back together.) That said, I don't particularly care for being stuck with only the one option for the rails, (although the Troy unit is nice), and the sort of "NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS" approach they took to the rest of the gas system. Plus the fact that if something goes wrong, it has to go all the way back to Ruger to fix it; I can't just order up some parts from the internet or anything. Also, given that lead-times on replacements from Ruger are something like 8 months out (Not a concrete number, just what I was quoted from a friend who had one who to send his back because of the selector issue), means it may spend more time with them then it will with me.

The Colt, on the other hand, is somewhat more maintenance intensive (but not a whole lot, just cleaning it is a little more detailed), but it is a cleaning procedure I am very well versed it, you can acquire parts for them almost anywhere, and after all, a Colt is a Colt. I got to hold one at a Gander Mountain in WI last month, and compared to the S&W M&P-15 that was next to it, was like comparing a GT-500 to a Focus. There's certainly nothing wrong with the Smith, and it was also a nice rifle, but everything about the Colt was just nicer. Since I'll be putting the KAC RAS on there, it'll be more or less kitted out the way I want it, and for just a midge more than what the Ruger will cost me.

Either one I get, will eventually end up wearing both an Aimpoint ML3, and a TA31F-G 4x ACOG on top of it (though not at the same time!), so I'll also have to get a flip-up BUIS for the Colt.

I could go with the usual answer (Get both!), and I might eventually, but for now I don't really see the need for two AR-15's of basically the same configuration. (16", Telestock, rail system).

So maybe the question ought to be, Which one to get first?

As much as I love the Ruger, and want them to sell as many SR-556's as they can possibly make, I'm leaning towards the Colt.

What do you guys think? Traditional, straight-laced AR Carbine, or the up-and-coming piston gun contender in the title match for the First AR Rifle?

We know a Colt is the gold standard in AR-15's.

We don't know diddly squat about the Ruger yet except what the gun magazines and Ruger tells us..

Check back after the mandatory Ruger Recall in a few months and the jury will be in by then.

Colt no quesiton I am not saying that the Ruger is a bad gun but it is heavy and relies on the piston system instead of the standard DI that normal ARs use. I am not a big fan of Pistons on the AR platform for a number of reasons.

There is nothing more maintenance intensive about the Colt. If anything the piston system on the Ruger is going to cause more long term maintenance than the Colt. I clean my Colt 6940 about the same way you describe cleaning the Ruger. And that is if I actually clean it. Something I haven't bothered to do in a while.

Colt vs. Ruger...sounds like options for a revolver.

Amongst the two I would buy the Ruger, though I have no experience with one, I am really fond of the GP system. The Colt I have experience with...but I don't like to clean that much. Personally I really like the POF, but I don't imagine that is in the budget.

:)

So that's two Colts and a Ruger.

It's not helping that I've heard you can snag a NIB 6920 for under a grand, although I haven't seen anywhere with prices like that yet.

rcmodel, where in eastern KS? Leavenworth here! :D

Colt has some of the best quality control in the industry, be it revolvers, 1911's, ar-15's, etc....that said my kimber shoots better and runs longer than my colt series 70 gold cup, I have put a python out of time, and really enjoy my old Colt sp-1 ar-15.
sorry, no experience with their new ar-15's, I'm not into paying that kind of price for a plain jane ar because is has that name on it. at least with the ruger you get the troy goodies. I'll stick with my S&W mp-15 though.

While I applaud the direction Ruger has been going the last couple of years, I don't believe there's any real comparison here. We don't even know who's making Ruger's AR.

That said, my personal choice in AR's is always Armalite for myriad reasons.

Get the Colt, but save yourself some cash and get a lower price than that.

Let the Ruger sit out there for a while and see what happens. I want to see something more substantial than the gun magazines (aka alternative advertising) and people buying it and running two boxes of ammo through it and declaring it flawless/the best thing since sliced bread.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with the Ruger, or that Ruger is bad (I have three excellent Ruger products in my house and would buy more happily), I'm just saying it's brand new and I'd not take a chance on it yet. Let other people's money do the preliminary testing has always been my motto.

I'm not sure where you guys are finding lower prices than about $1200 for a NIB 6920, but I'd sure like to know.

I'd rather not get a used one, even though I could probably pick one up for under $1k.

I'd just as soon spend the extra few $$$ and have a brand-new one that nobody's ever fed questionable reloads, or jammed a cleaning rod down and messed up the bore or crown or anything.

And since I'm (probably) not going to jump on the ACOG right away, I can absorb the difference in price.

That, and it's going to eat an awful lot of Wolf. I could splurge and get, like, American Eagle, but I can get twice as much Wolf for what I give for the AE. And, really, if it can't reliably run on the crappiest ammo around (baring super-cheap range reloads), what's the point? For $1200 it ought to be able to eat anything I put in it so long as it's strong enough to cycle the action. Don't mean it's diet will consist entirely of Wolf, as my favored SD load is 75-grain TAP FPD's, which it will also eat a lot of, but most all of the fam-fire and training ammo will be Wolf. At least until I get a reloading setup. Then I'll probably start buying mostly AE or other brass-cased ammo.

If I'm paying for the best of the best, though, it ought to behave like it.

It was $995 around here last weekend's show. We had dealer price war, which was great. It finally went back up to $1095. Shucks!
Yeah, the 6920 has been less than $1100 for some time, now.

You're on the path to righteousness, Rapier.

A Colt will eat Wolf, no question. Good training ammunition...I'll run it before I'll run gunshow mystery reloads.

The Colt is top of the line. It will also get the best resale in case you decide to sell it in the future. It's the one to buy first!

Though Colt may be the standard for AR's you need to listen to yourself and the hell what all of us think. It is your hard earned money and you should buy what you like. If some one says dpms, some one else will say bushmaster, and some one else will say rock river arms,,blah , blah blah, bhla etc. You have answered your question with the paragraph you wrote starting with "The problem is I really, really, really like...."have the intestinal fortitude and get what you want, make your self happy, not us.

Umm, I imagine the Ruger's resale value is better than the Colt right now...how do you know that will change?

:)

colt is the best name in ar15's.

they are not the best rifles in the ar15 category. (in fact their qc has really slipped lately)

colts 1911's are again the pride of hartford.

get the ruger, or better yet something better for less.

How nice. Yeah yeah yeah, we all know it's his money and all, and he should spend however he likes. Just one little problem, though. He came on here and asked opinions of us. So, the rest of us will tell him how we think.

Really? How about, near the end, he said, "I'm leaning toward the Colt"?
Obviously, the man is having a hard time deciding. That's why he's asking others' opinions. Again, in the end, it's his money, we all know that.

As much as I love Ruger (and own three) I couldn't justify their AR right now. Too soon so why go against more proven designs like the Colt? But I wouldn't get a Colt either because I like a midlength gas system on a carbine. I went ArmaLite but BCM get top marks for their middies.

The Colt should have no problem running with Wolf. A few of the guys I work with just bought some Colt 6940s and have run a lot of Wolf through them. All have been very reliable. My 6520 has also ran flawlessly using Wolf.

I handled the Ruger at the NRA show and it definitely felt and looked good but that pig was heavy. I guess Im just spoiled with my light 6520 though.

Don't buy the Ruger yet. I did, it went back to the factory once, and it's about to go back again. The upper was getting gouged by the bolt when it cycled, so they ground it out, re-blackened it and called it good, only problem is now it's shaving metal from somewhere else, and while they had it they dropped it and damaged the rear sight. I applaud a company for great customer service, but that doesn't mean squat if you can't deliver a good product.

I sure would like some pics of where the gouging is happening.

Well guys, I think I've more or less settled on the Colt.

Doesn't mean I'm not getting the Ruger, because I will. But that'll be either this coming fall, or next spring, or maybe even later, when it's matured a little bit.

Now I just have to play the waiting game.
