I love the new SR-556 but it's a bit out of my price range. SO I am trying to determine if there are any other similar options out there a little cheaper. What I like about the SR is it's tactical appearance with the Rails and the piston Drive and the caliber. U

The only other options I know of are the Sig 556 and the Keltec SU16 - which I am serioulsy considering at this point because it seems to have a lot going for it and seems to have relatively positive reviews. The Sig is probably just as expensive if not more.

Thoughts

The SU16 seems like it should be priced at half of MSRP. What does it have going for it aside from folding? I would take 1 Saiga over 3 Keltecs.

The SU has a lot I think.

PS - It doesn't have to be piston driven. THe SW M&P15 looks like a contender as well.

CMMG piston ARs were on AIM recently for $900, dunno if they are still in stock but they are around for very nice prices.

Something else. Ruger is....meh.... in my opinion, of course.

I asked almost exactly the same question, I believe it was either here or on PerfectUnion.

I decided to go with a Colt 6920, over the Ruger.

Not because there is anything wrong with the Ruger, (Which there isn't), and it's not really much more expensive than the Colt is (They can be had online for around $14-1500), but because I want the Ruger to be out a while longer so it can mature. Just like I'd love to have a Kel-Tec RFB, but it hasn't really been around long enough for me to be comfortable that they've worked all the kinks out.

I like the SR556; I like how it shoots and how it breaks down, and I'm sure I'll end up with one eventually. But in the meantime I'd rather have a rifle that's of a well-proven design, and that you can get parts for just about anywhere.

I've got about 360 rounds of Wolf and Monarch (mostly Wolf) steel cased ammo through by Ruger SR-556. Other than a couple of failure to lock the bolt back on the last shot in the first hundred rounds no issues. Looking at the bolt face its hard to tell its been shot at all. Since most folks consider Wolf "dirty nasty" ammo I'd say the claims of piston ARs staying cleaner would seem valid.

Accuracy is about is good as it gets with this ammo. So far I've very happy with it.
