So. Cal (aka Peoples Republic of California)
I need some advice from some handgun experts. My wife has agreed to let me buy a new toy with a budget of $600:). Since I live in California this is only a fun gun, no chance of getting a CCW here:banghead: and HD is covered with by a 12ga pump with a Surefire forend. I have narrowed my choices to either a Ruger P345, Glock 19, or Glock 21.

I already have 2 9mm's (Ruger p95 and AB-10) so the Glock 19 makes sense in that I don't have to start buying another caliber of ammo and 9mm is much cheaper than 45 (I shoot about 3000 rounds of 9mm a year). I decided on of the Glock 19 because I live in the Peoples Republic of California and am restricted to 10 round mags, so I might as well get a more compact gun.

I don't own a 45 and since I am capacity restricted a 45 makes sense. I know that both the Ruger and Glock are great guns (P345 was handgun of the year in 2004 I think). The Ruger is a little cheaper than the Glock around here (about $75) but the Ruger has some of those stupid "safety" features like a mag disconnect and intergal lock. I would like to support an American company, but I don't agree with adding "safety" features to firearms because of political pressure.

So what do you guys think? Should I stick with the 9mm and save some cash on ammo or should I get a 45 to round out my collection? If I get a 45 which is a better buy, the Glock 21 or Ruger P345?

The only thing I know good about the Ruger P345, is that it got OJ Simpson and his buddy some prison time. Get the Glock. orchidhunter

Since you are limited to 10 round magazines I would probably go with the Ruger 345.

Is The S&W M&P 45 Califonia legal? If it is you get an American made 45 designed to hold 10 rounds.

I hadn't considered the S&W M&P. I had a bad experience with a S&W Sigma a few years ago, wound up selling it for a loss and buying the Ruger P95. How does it stack up against the Glock? Do you know if it is actually made in the U.S.A. or is it an import like the XD? I guess I could give them a try, but I am a bit leary of S&W autos.

Any S&W M&P owners out there who can speak to the quality of these guns?

the ruger p345 i had was the most accurate handgun that i have ever owned. however I would get the glock 19 if i was you.

I have a Glock 19 and love it so I'd suggest that one. I've shot a both compact and standard glocks in several calibers (9mm, 40, 45) and they all shoot pretty much the same.

The only variable is the size. So I'd get whichever size you like (compact or standard) in 9mm (so the 19 or 17). Since they all shoot the same, why stock an extra type of ammo that costs more?

That said, the Glock 19 has a 15 round mag, so I'm not sure how that could impact your choice in CA.

What about a glock 23 (40cal) and get a glock 32(357sig) barrel then you have 2 more calibers to buy for, plus you get more gun for your buck!;)

I have owned all all of the guns being considered at one time or another. The new S&W M&P is made in the USA and is a much better gun than the Sigma. It is a good alternative for people whose hands are too small for the large framed Glock or people who live in states limited to 10 rounds.

I had one and sold it. Not because I didn't like it but because it did not do anything my G21 would not do., plus the Glock holds more rounds. I really just needed to thin the herd a little, so it was one of the ones sold.

If I were limited to 10 round magazines I would consider either the Glock 30, the S&W, or the P-345

Your rational for the G19 makes sense but it sounds like you really want a 45. plus the G19 is designed to be a 15 shot pistol and you are limited to 10 round mags.

If it's for fun branch out and get a .45. Go with the Ruger! I plan on it. After my wife approved purchase of a tac 870, and possible 1 month of giving up my freedom to buy anything for a month, I will get a p345.

Maybe I can help with this..

Depends on what you are doing. I conceal my firearms using a belly band supported by suspenders, so gun size is not an issue. I started w/ a .380 but quickly advanced to the .45.
The Ruger is a FANTASTIC weapon. For me that is. The single stack mag gives it a thinner profile than the others. I cannot praise the feel of this gun in my hand enough. Shoots like a laser, real tight grouping at 15 yards. Conceals well.
I purchased a Glock 19 next. Seemed like the thing to do. Everybody praises the Glock. And it is very nice. Shoots very well. Very low recoil. High capacity. My wife enjoys it. Very accurate.
Next came the XD 45 compact. Also nice. Heavy feeling though. Mag rattles when not chambered (common problem nobody really mentions...) Also accurate and will digest any ammunition fed to it and wow.. what a capacity.
I know I am going against the grain of most people. But for me, the Ruger is just a better feeling gun. In my hands and at the range. (I am 6'0 180lbs if that helps)
The integral lock is not an issue. Just don't use it. The double action pull is VERY hard. But the single action pull from there out is light and crisp w/ very little travel. The thumb safty is in a very good position. I practice my draw (unloaded) and release the safety as the gun is coming up.
For these two reasons, this is the only one of the three I carry in a chambered condition.
Just can't bring myself to carry a Glock or the XD chambered. Too easy to snag the trigger in a piece of clothing. That being said, if I used a conventional holster I would probably opt to carry the others chambered.
My wife does carry the Glock in her purse at times. Not chambered. But w/ enough practice you can rack the slide in a fraction of a second.
I hope this helps.

Buy what feels good to YOU. Don't buy into all the hype.:)

The P345 is easier to conceal, will shoot anything...

I surprised that you didn't consider the Springfield XD, having many of the same features as a Glock, the feel of a 1911 and a larger capacity magazine than the 345.

I did consider a Springfield XD. I friend of mine has one and he let me try it out. It just didn't feel right in my hand. Plus the cost is up there with the Glock and while it may be a great gun I just can't see it being worth the same price as a Glock.

I am leaning more toward the Ruger P345 now, I just have to get over that mag disconnect. Does anyone know if that can be removed/disabled?

Every red blooded American should own a .45 ACP handgun!!!!
Every red blooded American should own a reliable handgun!!!
Therefore...........Buy a Glock G-21................I did.........:D

Glock 19 Why?

Glocks are Reliable Accurate and practically Indestructible. And Why the 19? IMHO glock makes the best 9mm's. 17/19/26/34 you can't go wrong.

Also 9mm ammo is less expensive than .45 even if you're reloading.

Went with the Glock 19

Follow Up: I went with the Glock 19, after a week of trying to find one. Seems like every thing is flying off of the shelves in California they told me they got 10 in that morning and had already sold 6. I bought it at the Shootist in Murrieta, CA. Great customer service, I would recommend them to anyone in the Inland Empire area. Now I just have to wait 10 days to pick it up.

Would it be more fun to get a different operating system or caliber? That's what you sould decide.

At least the p345 would have a similar op. system as the p95.
