In Edit: Maybe this should have been in Gun smithing? Sorry about that.

I recently bought a police trade in Ruger P89. It was in poor cosmetic shape but ran alright so I sent it off to a Local GunSmith for a refinish.

The Gunsmith called me yesterday and told me the slide is cracked. I was like "What a p89 slide cracking? That's crazy talk."

Well apparently it is cracked. He thought it was a deep scratch so he sanded it down and then Buffed it. It was still there so I had him Use dye penatrant on it and lo and behold its a crack. I do not know if it is all the way through to the inside. I didn't have him go that far with it.

The Slide it pretty substantial so I am wondering if there's a option of grooving it and have it welded and just sanding it down. Slide is to be cerakoted and is Not a Stainless slide. I have access to to fantastic Journeyman Welders that would probably TIG it up for me.

As shown in the pic is it is in the middle of the slide towards the muzzle. It doesn't run to the bottom and is about 1/8th" long.

Send it to ruger. Get a RMT (might be return material tag) from ruger. Call ruger and talk to them. they might want to entire gun.

I'm pretty sure Ruger will probably do something to take care of you, but I'm not sure I'd expect a new slide or new P89. The P89 has been out of production for quite a while and I don't think they support those guns anymore.

I just had it welded.

It's up on the surface grinder now taking the nub off then on to xray.

Wow I have never ever heard of a Ruger anything cracking. Sending it to Ruger might have resulted in you getting a brand new gun.

Might one of those very very rare police trade ins where the police officer actually shot it more than 50 rounds a year.

Just my .02,

Ruger doesn't have slides for these anymore and I do not want a plastic gun on trade or for cost.

This was a $100 gun. It was a duty gun then training gun so it has had the snot shot out of it. Their armorer put a new barrel in it before I got it.

These only go for $300 in nib shape. I really don't want to spend half that price on a slide. But since this one has a history I've tried to give the old workhorse a go at fixing it with all its original parts.

So far it looks good. Crack didn't go all the way through to inside. It might have been a casting defect or outer crack. . It was grooved and dye pen'd then TIG welded. Couldn't even tell it after it was reground.

Supposed to be irradiated here in a bit.
