Need some advise on getting the new ruger takedown model 40 cal carbine.Have been finding that it has a lot of problems and that there a lot of after market parts to fix some of them.Is it really worth the effort to put up with the problems just to get a pistol caliber rifle. Was looking for something for home defense that was reliable.

I have one, and haven't had any problems with it at all. I did change out the trigger pack to a Volquartsen 2.25 lb as well as installed a Sig Romeo 5 RDS on it. I have the Glock mag well insert in mine because I also have a Kel-Tec Sub 2k in 40 S&W that uses Glock magazines.

Both of these carbines have served me well, and are very fun to shoot, but I was surprised by the actual amount of felt recoil that the 40 S&W has in a carbine platform.
I also load sub-sonic loads for them and shoot them suppressed.

If the 40 S&W version is like mine in 9mm, the only issue you'll have is keeping the thing fed with ammo. I'm using the Glock magwell and using Magpul Glock magazines.

In 400 or so rounds I have had exactly 1 hangup, it was a stovpipe with some really really old PMC Starfire ammo.

No problems with mine in 9mm.
I wasn't aware that there were any major problems with any of them.
There are things that could be improved, but IMO none of them keep the gun from functioning like it should.

I've had the 9mm version since July, 2018 and the round count is now up to 455 rounds. No trouble yet and the only problem I recall hearing of is the charging handle loosening up after 1000 + rounds, but it's meant to come off; so it can be ambidextrous. Just keep an eye on it to be sure it's on tight. Had a holographic sight on it for a while but back to irons now. Recently swapped the Glock mag well into it to share mags with my Glock 19. It's a handy little carbine that I like a lot. What issues are occurring with the 40 cal. models?

I have the old first gen p c 9 that uses P series mags.
Highly recommend.

I have the original PC40 — runs like a champ, but uses the Ruger mags only. Two considerations - possibly the worst trigger ever (worse than the S&W 380 bodyguard :what:), and the rifle is HEAVY for the size. The trigger was fixed....

Built like a tank, goes bang every time the go switch is hit, works....

I have a 9mm one and like it a lot. I shoot it out to 50 yds and it is very accurate at that distance with a Romeo 5. I installed a M*Carbo trigger and can highly recommend it,vast improvement over the factory unit.

I have the 9mm version. Works like a champ. Alittle heavy but works. Kinda like me. I keep mine for home defense. Love mine. Would like to get a second one.

First Ruger PC Carbine I ever saw in person is the one I own now. LGS had gotten it in and the owner handed it to me over the counter so I could examine it and my first words were; "This thing is heavier than it looks". Although it's not enough weight to bother me and it still handles quickly. I can see it being a viable home defense piece. Still wondering about the OP mentioning problems with the 40 cal. models. Can anyone shed some light on that ?

I added a MCARBO shock buffer to my PC9 as a bit of a preventative measure, the gun was operating just fine I just wanted to add a bit of extra protection.

My only issue was the screw holding the fore end on would loosen, so I put a dab of removable Loctite on it and it’s been great (Glock Mags).

I’m sure the .40 will pack a bit more Wallop on target if you can find one (and food to feed it). Good luck with your search, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed when you get it home.

Stay safe.

I would like to have one of the new Ruger PCC rifles but I can wait till the craziness dies down, If it ever does. In the mean time I have one of the original Hi-Point 9mms and also a Marlin Camp Carbine in 9mm. So I am aware of what a PCC semi auto can do. I can keep my shots on a mans chest at 200 yards. But I feel thats the max range for a 9mm round. For up close stuff at 100 yards or less or used indoors I think they would be hard to beat. And my Marlin has never had a single failure of any kind.

My bud let his 12 YO son kill his first deer with his Marlin 9mm. The range was around 40 yards and he said the deer ran in a semi circle with blood spurting out both holes and then died after a less than 40 yard run and never made it out of sight before he was down.
