Had the occassion to stop in at an area gun shop this afternoon after making a pastoral call at the hospital. I love window shopping, but the clerks get a bit testy when they see me coming :) A few weeks ago, I saw they had a SP101 2 1/4 .357 for $389. Today it was $430. I asked, "What gives?" and was told Ruger took at 8% cost increast effective June 1.

EIGHT PERCENT??? Holy toledo, Batman! Any other gun manufacturers making such a drastic increase that you know of???

For that big of a price jump you'd be better off going with Smith & Wesson. I like Rugers but I'm not gonna pay the same, or close to it, as a Smith.

My dealer's theory is that the retarded lock on the S&Ws has turned into a Ruger windfall. He sells more new Rugers and used Smiths than any new Smiths that aren't J-frames.

I don't know about Ruger revolvers but their pistols re-sale / trade value is low.
A LINB P95 goes for $300 max. I doubt this will change just because Ruger bumped up their MSRP. IMO, if the other gun manufactures aren't doing a price increase too, this will hurt Ruger.

Are we sure that Ruger did indeed increase their MSRP 8 percent? Or is this dealer using it as an excuse to make some extra bucks form himself? :scrutiny:

There was a price increase at Ruger. Price you will pay will cover the cost of re-stocking inventory with the new firearm.

"Just one more reason to hate Ruger. "

Really? I have 6 Ruger's. Bought the first in 1978. Every one of them has been 100% reliable, affordable, well made. What's to hate?

I believe he's referring to Bill Ruger's complete sell-out of the American gun owner. Google "ruger letter" and you'll see.

More specifically - "no honest man needs more than 10 rounds in any gun…" and "I never meant for simple civilians to have my 20 and 30 round magazines…"

That's why Ruger sucks.

Interesting that a pistol in stock he'd bought prior to the price increase went up too, don't you think? I guess he's taking a page from the gas companies who raise prices when the cost of oil increases even though they didn't pay that much for the fuel that they're selling at the stations which has been sitting in the tanks or the crude stock waiting for processing at the refineries.

And most of these self-styled Puritans don't hate the Clintonistas at S&W or the Hillary hole on all of their revolvers.

Bill Ruger and the AWB are both long dead but the AGREEMENT lives on.:banghead:

Its just good business... besides I bet you do the same but its ok.... no you say? So if you have a house you've been in for ten years or more you will sell it to me for "what they were going for back then"? Or a stock that ya bought cheap? Or any other number of things?

If you want anything at todays price buy it today... we all have learned that to one degree or another- its life

re Bill Ruger:

Lighten up guys!

The Garands the Army issued me had only carried 8 rounds. The rifle was more than adequate for shooting wars. When necessary we could carry extra clips. Reload was no big deal.

All of my revolvers hold 6 or less rounds, I knew that when I bought them. They are as effective as the shooter lets them be.

Since Bill Ruger developed and used single shot rifles, his opinion may be more typical of active hunters than the military minded crowd.

Besides, cursing a successful man for having an opinion different than your is probably un-American.

As much as I like and admire Bill Ruger, his slip up was un-American. He really goofed on that one.

Americans have gotten used to realatively low priced guns. In fact, guns have been a bargain for many decades in this country. All guns could double in price and still be worth buying and having.

Get used to the price increases because all major gun makers have had big price increases in the last year and its going to get worse, I promise.

I bought a NIB Ruger GP161 (blue) in February. When I was back there a few weeks ago, they had another 161 that was almost $80 more than I paid. Thats over - what - 10, 12 weeks??? Yikes!!!

The news that started all of this is a Ruger SP101. A few weeks ago the tag said $389. The other day it was $425 or $429 - I forget which. I asked if it was a goof. Now, this shop is noted for being one of the least expensive in SE Texas (Tomball Pawn). I don't think they are dinking around...if they said Ruger went up, Ruger went up.

I like window shopping there when I'm in that part of town. Good people, good selection, GREAT prices.

This price jump seems to be confirmed by Academy, too. I saw on their website a few weeks ago the KP95 was about $360. The other day it was $389. That's about a 8% jump, isn't it?

I really don't care if the guy says he hates Santa Claus. As long as Ruger makes affordable, quality firearms, I'll continue to buy 'em

BINGO. That's why Sturm, Ruger continues to get my business. Their guns are made in America, are GENERALLY of high quality (yes...I know...there are exceptions, but likewise even Colt, Kimber, and others make a few goofs every now and then), and are affordable.

Sadly, their M77 rifle just doesn't work for me - it doesn't fit me right. :(
But their pistols are right up my alley. :D

Gotta get back to work....

Whoo-hooo! I just noticed I have been upgraded to "Senior Member" Yippee! That and a buck ninety-five will get me a medium cup of Starbucks!!! Does RHIP here??? <grin>

8% is not a lot. Some steel prices have doubled in the last year or so, that and the all time high price of fuel it's no wonder prices have gone up. That's part of life. I have four Rugers and like them all although not quite as much as my S&Ws.

You guys are nuts

Ruger AND Smith just had recent price increases on their revolvers. The Ruger hating in this thread is ridiculous! At least be fair. Costs do rise over time ya know!!

Funny, I just went to two gun shops...Ruger SP101 is still priced $419...same as it has been for the past year. What Ruger Price raises are you referring to?

With the US $$ inflating as it has been and is...I would expect to see more and more jumping here shortly. Its a shame :(

Compared to computers, cameras, new homes, and cars...American weapons are dirt cheap! As I previously stated...Ruger has not raised prices from what I just saw at two gun stores this very evening! I think a few souls are getting symptoms before they get the disease. Just think...if you lived in Europe, you would not have to complain about shelling out your hard earned bucks for weapons now would you? Lets have a bit more attitude of grattitude on here folks...I'm tired of the whining.

It's been no secret that the global metals market has inflated dramatically. We've seen the results in ammo prices. Firearms makers usually make price increases in Jan, or wait a little later until just after the SHOT show. My boss told me a couple months ago, and has been telling our customers, that we cannot guarantee prices to hold thru the summer as the manufacturers and distributors have warned us that they may have to make price increases because of increased prices for raw materials, and shipping as well with current oil prices. It looks like Ruger is the first to increase their prices, and I'll not be surprised when others follow. It stinks, but you're still getting great firearms at pretty darn good prices here in the US - even with the price increases.
