Ruger ranch. Now with real mags

I wonder how well it will work. The Mossberg MVPs are notorious for having a bad, "draggy" bolt due to their AR mags, but I'm not sure if that's an inevitable part of the AR mag, or a design problem on Mossberg's part.

My MVP sucks with metal AR mags, like the one it came with. However, it does just fine with 10 and 20 round p-mags.

if these feed better than the mossberg mvp i will have a hard time resisting. especially considering i have been considering a 223 bolt action to compliment my growing family of ARs....magazine compatibility being a big bonus. looks like ruger will be getting a few of my paychecks this year.

Mini-14’s if I remember correctly do not take AR magazines. That would be a nice change.

Not a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle. It's the American Rifle Ranch or American Ranch Rifle. It's a bolt gun.

The Ruger American just went from being a budget gun that shot great to a top tier rifle. While I've never had any issues with the older magazines I didn't trust them. I always felt the mags were the weak link. I currently have Predators in 6.5 Creedmoor and 308. Hopefully I can buy a replacement stock to use the AI magazines and not have to buy a new rifle.

So can you retrofit the one you already have ?

I also don't have a problem with the flush mounted mag that I currently have on my .300 Blackout but this is VERY interesting since I probably have 150 AR mags lying around.

I don't think you will be able to retrofit an existing gun. I bought a 7.62x39 for my son and the bolt has extensive machining on the bottom to allow for the use of magazines. The upside of this is that the rifle functions pretty smoothly over the loaded magazine. Hopefully these rifles with work the same way. I could see both a 5.56 and a .300 BO fitting in my safe if the concept proves solid.

OUCH!!
I just bought a 5 round 5.56 Ranch for $319 in early December. Whadda bummer!
Oh well, it shoots pretty good right out of the box. Here it is on it's first day at the range shooting 55g FMJBT's with 25g H335 with random brass at 100 yards with a $20 Simmons 3-9x40 scope and $7 Walmart rings. The lower left target was my sight-in target after bore sighting it through the barrel. 3" low and 3" right and it was good enough for killing soda cans. My kids love it!

A smaller magazine does make you take a little more time to reload and helps reduce the burn rate of your ammo.

Pretty cool for Ruger to do this, I want one but can't really find a reason to buy one.

Just like when starting out (at least for me), a bolt gun makes you slow down, take time with your shots and make every shot count. Can you do this with an autoloader? Sure, but it takes discipline. Many times I shoot my AR single shot by loading one cartridge at a time so I am forced to slow down.

A smooth sliding bolt is a real pleasure to operate. The Ruger American Ranch does not have a really smooth bolt, it's tight fitting but feels like dragging your finger across the grooves of a record. At the other end of the spectrum, my first CF rifle was a Remington 788 in .308 which cost me $119 brand new several decades ago. That has a rough, loose bolt but it locks up tight and is an incredibly accurate rifle.

This is good news. Bigger magazines are better, and a successful commonplace mag design is better than weirdo proprietary.

There will always be a place for the flush fit magazine, for it is handy in woods and brush, and it looks nice. If the manufacturers ever fail us, and you cannot buy restricted capacity magazines, you can make your own with steel sheet and shop tools. :D

Again, Ruger is after my money. They now have released their ranch rifles in 556 and 300 bo that accept ar mags

As soon as they release a Mini-14/Mini-30 that will take AR magazines, they'll see more of my money, pronto!

As it is, Savage already got all the money I was going to spend on an 223 bolt gun.
