I didn't know about this Version of the Ruger American

I just saw the new rifle on Bud's. $443 shipped to your FFL. I would expect the price to settle down by a few more bucks over the next month or so.

For that price, I think Ruger has another winner. It's kind of crazy how they can go into a firearms business that's completely saturated and mature, and still churn out new products that people want to buy.
$430 with free shipping here. This would be my Black Friday rifle if the price comes down to $300s! I thought American line is in the $300s. I hope they make it in 308 bore. I reload, 308 projectile is plenty.

I don't know if they've been released yet. None of the online retailers have them. It's looking like it would perfectly fill the niche of fun gun that could also hunt deer if the opportunity arises.
They are around here already.

Meant to add, should be fine with steel cases on a bolt action except perhaps for accuracy. Steel cases expand differently than brass and may require cleaning the chamber if the ammo is very dirty.

Apart from Hornady steel match, most of this imported stuff is low grade blaster ammo for semi autos in SKS or AKs.

I easily get around one inch to inch and a quarter out of my CZ with WPA .

I'm sure it varies depending on area, but the 7.62x39mm is a very common rifle round, probably second in popularity only to the 5.56/.223. There is ultra cheap steel cased ammo available from outfits like Wolf and Tula, as well as probably some surplus com-bloc stuff still around if you look hard enough.

That said, the Ruger may not do so well with steel cased ammo. I've read a number of complaints that the mini 30 doesn't like steel case right out of the box so I'm not sure if there would be similar issues with the American. For me, I'm going to be a handload only guy as soon as stupid new ammo laws kick in this January, so I see brass as an investment, even though the initial price is higher.

The ruger should be fine since is has a 311 bore. It only has the magazine in common with the mini 30.

Glad it works for you. Not my experiences with the stuff but every rifle tends to like what it likes. Some of my .22s like remington thunderbolt but I hate cleaning after it.

How do you know that?
I also would like a bolt rifle that I can top load without removing the magazine, the half opening is not to my like.

I saw over on AR15.com a screenshot of an email from a Ruger rep stating that the RAR in 7.62x39 has a .311 bore. It's also worth noting that the initial promo video showed the rifle being shot with Tula, and Ruger released a second video specifically addressing the use of foreign made steel cased ammo. (In general, it's OK. Just don't use unknown ammo dug up from an underground stash in Bulgaria.)

I really want one of these rifles but only if Ruger releases it with a left hand action. I've made my request for that to Ruger via their website and Facebook page.

I guess folks that have to have a .308 bore diameter will just stick with the 300 BO version and folks that want to shoot 7.62x39 steel cased ammo with go for this version. I truly hope that Ruger adds this magazine system to both the 300 BO and the 5.56 version. If they do, I will definately get a 5.56 Ranch. I have a 7.62x39 on the way and am pretty excited about this rifle. It has a lot of the things that I am looking for in a truck/desert exploring (the fancy folks call this Overlanding now ) rifle. I think Ruger did a great job with this one and while it can't please everyone, I bet it pleases most...

This video has me pretty fired up for my new rifle....

It will be a couple of weeks before I can get back out to the desert, but I can't wait to shoot this one.

Plenty of good accuracy reports out there with .308 bullets in a .310-.311 bore.

Because I called them.....anything else you would like to know.......

I just picked up my rifle and it looks great! I won't get to shoot it until next weekend, but the overall fit and finish are great. The mags fit tightly and for the most part holds open the bolt; sometimes the bolt does override the bolt hold open feature. I think I am going to start with a red dot and then move to a compact scope. This will probably end up replacing my JM Marlin that I take on road trips if everything pans out as planned.

I love the idea of an accurate bolt gun in 7.62x39, but I really don't know why someone would be excited over being able to use mini 30 or AK or AR magazines in a bolt gun. Just thinking about putting 30 round through a bolt gun in quick succession makes me want to take a nap.

Just cus there relatively cheap and available. I REALLY wanted to love my Savage Axis .223, but the flimsy proprietary magazines were a deal breaker- and at $45 for a replacement, its not like I could hoard a bunch and just throw them away when the cheesey plastic catch breaks.
If that rifle had used AR mags, it would have been a keeper. Seriously looking at the Ruger now.

A 10 round AR P mag would be nice, I will admit that, but I can't see using anything bigger than that.

I agree SG2800, I have no desire to use anything larger that 10 rounds in the this rifle. Mini mags are very sturdy and proven to work. I have been hesitant to get an American because of all the issues they have been experiencing with their magazines. This solves that. I can't wait to give this one a try.

I have heard that the 300BO versions are a nightmare and I like the Mini style mags anyways. The ten round mags do not protrude that far out the bottom and that is about max for me with a bolt gun. This is a solid rifle and I can't wait to shoot it.

Here is one possible way I will set this rifle up...forward mounted Red Dot....very light and very handy!

The stock is actually more Coyote than Green, but I had to play with the picture to show the rifle in poor light.
