Im not a big Ruger fan but I just did some work on a brand new 308 gunsight Scout rifle and thought I would share what was done to make a good shooter. I fit an adjustable Hawkeye trigger to the gun from Brownells. This trigger's sear was cut very terribly on an angel and needed to be squared up and beveled slightly to decrease engaugement. The owner wanted a 2.75 lb trigger pull that was easily acheaved with virtualy no creep. So the Hawkeye is not a bad trigger but definately needs close fitting. A SS shrewd muzzel brake was installed on the original threads but that posed a problem. The shrewd folks want the brake bore to be .020 larger than the .308 bore but the factory threads are a tiny bit off center line as many factory die cut muzzel threads are, so I had to bore the brake out to .336 rather than the suggested .328 to ensure a no contact bore. Not crazy about it being off center by the few thousandths, but we will see how it prints. Ruger beds this rifle in routered wood so it got a epoxy steel bed beding job. The most disapointing thing on this gun is how slopy the steel magazine fits. The plastic ones fit snug but the OEM steel has got to be one of the worst fitting magazines I have ever handled in the 30+ years Iv been gunsmithing! The fix is to put a small scribe line even with the front trigger bow onto the mag and gring off the finish as a dot just inside the scribe line. Fire up the mig welder on medium heat and put 2 dots of weld on the grind spots. cut the weld dots to a hight of .060 and bingo, the mag fits perfectly snug in place with none of that front to back walking while latched in. In this locked position, the bullet feed will always hit the upper most part of the feed ramp which will impart the least amount of deformaton if any should acure. The feed ramp needs a nice polish up the middle only since its a in-line feed. I dont know what Ruger was thinking when they pushed this crapy mag lock up design out the door but this is the perfect fix to that issue. Hope this helps any of you scout gun owners out there.
