Picked up my Ruger SR-762 today, what a nice package! I didn't realize it included a nice soft case, and a free lock of course ;)

What struck me at first is how "small" the rifle is, doesn't feel much bigger than any of my AR15s. Weight-wise it's not a svelte AR15, but it's not an overweight gun either. Really like the iron sights, that ghost ring may be something I can actually use.

Anyway, at $1450 new it seems like a decent deal and I'm sure it will deliver the goods when it reports for work.

Just be careful if you use a foward support hand you accidentally grab onto the gas block. Did yours come with the gen 3 pmags? You did get the rail sections right. I only ask cause mine didn't have them and I didn't realize it till it was too late.

Yup gen 3 mags and rail sections.

Good deal on an awesome rifle! I also got mine for $1450, awhile back. Gotta say I've been more impressed with this rifle than anything else I've picked up this year. With my handloads I'm getting consistent 5 shot Sub-Moa groups. With factory it opens up to anywhere from an inch to 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards. Overall great rifle, anyone wanting to get into the AR 10 game I always recommend the SR762. If they hate piston guns (and some people do) I recommend the DPMS GII as an alternative.

I changed the standard buttstock for a Magpul CTR with the enhanced buttpad, makes shooting it from the bench/prone much more enjoyable.

I also changed the trigger out for a Geissele SSA-E... I can't recommend this trigger enough!

Finally, I swapped out the standard charging handle for a BCM Gunfighter 7.62 with the large latch. Makes charging a breeze now.

I topped it off with a Luepold VX-R 3-9x40mm with the Firedot Duplex.

This rifle is my hog buster, coyote popper, and deer slayer. Not a single bad thing about it from me. There is some concerns with proprietary parts for some people, but I'm more than confident that Ruger will always have my back if I ever need anything. They always have, Ruger's CS is second to none.

ETA: The iron sights that ships with the rifle are made by Samson, which are of high quality.

Unless you shoot out the barrel the only proprietary part you should have to worry about is the bolt. Ruger will sell you the whole assembled bolt for 175 if you want a spare.

Yeah like I said, I'm not worried. Most of the time when the SR762 or the 556 comes up for discussion, someone comes along knocking it for the proprietary parts and gas system. I actually praised Ruger when they released them for going a little outside the box, and not offering a DI like everyone else.

I have handled one a couple times and it puts me in mind of my saiga 308. And thats saying something for an AR10 to be that trim and light. I am pleasantly surprised with my saiga 308 (also a piston driven 16" 308) doing sub 5" groups at 200M with open sights and will probly scope it. But for a 16" AR10 for myself I would buy the ruger. They are very nice. And if its true an extra bolt is only 175 I would get one of those too.

Thanks for the shopping list EchoM70, lol.

Actually, apart from the Leupold which I'm unfamiliar with, those upgrades are exactly what I'll be doing.

My Saiga 308 doesn't hold a candle to my SR 762. The Saiga is junky and clunky, the Ruger is nice and refined.

May I ask why an extra bolt is a desired thing? I'm a newbie to this platform. Thanks.

I'll take a stab: because it's proprietary to this rifle, if the bolt it came with was broken beyond repair there's only one source for a replacement; Ruger.

I suppose there could come a day in the future when the rifle is discontinued, Ruger runs out of parts, the rifle becomes a boat anchor.

I've got an odd-duck 9mm carbine I really like that's no longer in production, Wilkinson Arms Linda, I stockpiled some of the parts most likely to break because I know someday there will be no parts available for it.

The lugs on the bolt are a wearable part. I keep spare parts so if something breaks I can just swap the part, and then I can just pick up another spare at my leisure. If you only shoot 100 rounds a year it's probably not something to worry about.

Theres nothung junkyvor clunky about saiga 308. One of the all around best AK ever brought to this country. Did you know your Saiga is chambered tighter than a Springfield M1a?

Sorry, all AKs are clunky/junky. All of mine certainly are. I do not know if indeed the Saiga is chambered tighter than a Springfiled M1a. I do know that my Springfield M1a is quite accurate while my Saiga is not so much. Maybe it's the crappy sights and short sight radius on the Saiga. Maybe its the crappy scope mount or horrible trigger. Maybe it is because the Saiga is just junky/clunky compared to my M1a. Or maybe it is just my opinion as a rifle instructor. :D

On another topic, does anyone seriously think they are going to wear out the bolt on a SR 762? I mean really?

If you are a rifle instructor and you shoot it enough in class, it is quite possible you could wear out the bolt one day (have a lug shear off).

Wait a sec. The Saiga as-is is a sporterized, neutered AK. It has a long cantilever link from where the trigger should be, and it is truly awful. Once 'unconverted' with a Tapco trigger group, it gets much better.

Comparing a 308 Saiga to an M1A or Ar-10 is like a 60's Land Cruiser against a Lexus LX 570.:scrutiny:
