Will be picking up a SR1911 5" this week from a LGS. Haven't been "into" the 1911 platform for close to 30 years now. Had a Springfield moderately modified and Colt 9mm LTW Commander back in that day. Just want a very reliable, relatively accurate 1911 without breaking the bank. They are too nostalgic and Americana not own one.

Anyone here have much experience with them?
Well OP... There you have it. You got your answer and them some. The right thing to do now is to go ahead and order you another.

I've got both the CMD and full 5" bbl.'d Rugers and have had no problems with either. Being all steel, they do tend to sag your gunbelt for all day carry, but both were good to go right out of the box. LSWC's target velocity reloads to full house +P JHPS, all feed and function. Five years ago, I shot "Distinguished" out at Front Sight's 4-day Defensive Handgun Course, and won the 'Mono a Mono' steel shoot-off with the 5 incher. BTW, the gun was brand new, less than 20 rounds through it when I participated in the course. No bobbles, no hang-ups, and the sights were dead on...

I'd opine that you couldn't do better for the money, buying either one. I've got over 6000 rounds through them now with no issues whatsoever. I have over 50 years experience now with 1911's, mostly Colts with a WWll Remington-Rand thrown in, but these two Rugers are just as accurate and better sighted then my Series 70 Colts from 30-40 years ago.

Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Rod

Rodfac,

When you shot "Distinguished" using the brand new
Ruger, did you just by chance have one of your
Colt's as a backup?

Not that you needed one as it turned out but
it would seem prudent. l :)

In the 11,800 rounds while I had my Ruger 4.25" .45ACP steel-framed 1911,
-two factory front sight blades fractured and came off while shooting;
-a slide-stop lobe broke off;
-an extractor hook broke off;
-this earlier version of this model also didn't shoot to point of aim; I can't remember if it was high or low; a replacement adjustable rear sight cured that problem which Ruger sells on its website; the rear sight also fractured a screw sending its parts flying; a 2nd adjustable rear sight was fine when I sold the gun;
-I must day the gun & I were not to my accuracy standards over 10 yards away. I replaced the barrel bushing with a fitted bushing which tightened up my groups from ~8" to 5" at 15 yards. As I said, I sold this specific 1911, but I'm keeping my other three 5" 1911s of other brands.

As I read this thread, most people have been happy with their Ruger 1911s, however. I really did like the balance of a Commander-sized 1911. Perhaps I'll get another 4.25" 1911 someday.

That's a lot of rounds. Like with a car or any man made device, I expect stuff to need maintance or break and need replacement. As far as accuracy goes, my at the time girlfriend and I were dead accurate with our example. I brought an M&P 2.0 Compact with the full Apex trigger kit with thin Trijicon night sights and other top teir handguns which I can not recall because this was 2-3 years ago. The SR1911 was more accurate out the box than all other other pistols IIRC. I think you got a lemon.

One caveat which might not apply to
the all steel .45s but my experience with
the commander sized 9mm was that I
thought the recoil spring was too light.
Gun worked fine but it was snappy.

I put in a heavier recoil spring; the snappiness
disappeared; the gun kept on ticking.

Maybe the same applies to the .45s; doesn't
hurt to try a slightly heavier recoil spring. I
think it cuts down on wear and tear of the
firearm.

Perhaps some of L-2's problems were related
to a too light recoil spring.

I have a LW CMD I picked up recently and a 10 mm. I did drop a night hawk barrel into the CMD successfully, and put some Wilson parts in it for a reliable carry. The 10 I dressed up with stainless parts for my woods gun. IMG_E0117.JPG

I am a happy camper today. I found a NIB Ronin 4.25" 9mm in Oklahoma on Gun Broker. $859 + tx, free shipping. But I just bought a Bersa .380 recently and can't do my NIC at the FFL until July 5th or so. But I figure I was lucky finding just what I wanted at a good price. Even with transfer fee I'm under my goal.
