Ruger SR9

My friend, this has been on here a lot. A search will find you tons of replies. I'm a revolver guy but I've had quite a few autoloaders. My SR9 is, by far, my favorite. When a thread pops up asking the best value for the buck in this arena, the Ruger P95 and Sigma always are mentioned. Outstanding pistols. The SR9 is a bit more but it gets my vote.

I love mine. It shoots easonably accurate, low recoil, and I haven't had any failures with it. You'll read that some people don't like the trigger but I don't have a problem with it. I own 5 autoloaders and all of them have different trigger pulls. Its just something to get use to. Some people have reported barrel peening but I haven't had that problem either.

Kiwi,

I'm not familiar with gun laws in NZ, but assume that you just want a range blaster. The most common complaint is the SR9's lousy trigger, which is why I don't own this gun anymore. I dry-fired it a couple hundred times, but to no avail. Try out the trigger pull before you buy. I'd recommend a Smith & Wesson M&P 9, Ruger P95 or CZ P07 over the SR9, assuming that you're just considering polymer 9mm guns.

I haven’t had any issues with my trigger. Keep in mind that the SR9 has a mag disconnect, if you dry fire it without the mag in you will damage the striker. The mag disconnect can be removed. Also ghost is making a trigger bar; it should be shipping the 16th of this month.

Cheers for the input gentlemen, been looking also at a cz 75b in 9mm as well, so it looks like cz75b or the sr9. At the moment i am flip flopping between the two hmmm decisions decisions.

I also have 1000 rounds through mine with no problems that were the guns fault.

It is an excellent pistol that feels great in the hand.

I had one of the bad ones---barrel peened so bad at 100 rounds that it held the slide back---Ruger replaced the barrel and slide---then I promptly traded it off when I got it back---the thrill was gone.

No interest in ever buying another one.

Glock and M&P for me from now on.

CZ vs. SR9

I strongly suggest you find a place that at least has them both in stock and handle them before making a final decision. They are quite different:all steel vs. polymer; DA/SA vs. DA; hammer vs. striker. A couple things they have in common are 9mm, good ergos, soft shooter, and very accurate.

You have some decisions to make, too, that may help guide you. Going to carry? The Ruger may get the nod for lighter weight and slimmer frame. Strictly range gun? The CZ may get the nod there - heavier weight helps tame recoil even with the 9mm. Pricetag? The Ruger will probably win that one.

If you decide on the SR9, I might suggest waiting a little, as the new trigger on the SR9c is a much improved version of what has been in the larger gun. It's supposed to get put into the newest full-size guns, but it can't be retrofit to older guns. Try a SR9 vs SR9c - see what you think (if you want a carry gun, the compact may get your approval, too).

Both are good guns, but both have an area of strength. Shoot them if you can, but at least handle them before buying.

i own the SR9 since july 2009 i love it ! put about 700 rounds thur it so far i took the magazine disconnect out of my SR9 it improved the trigger pull a little. I think the mag disconnect was rubbing on the firing pin which IMHO cause more pressure and grittiness on the trigger pull-take the mag disconnect out and fire it 250 times then it will improve greatly!

My SR9 is my everyday concealed carry gun till i buy a .45

Another satisfied customer here. Had mine for 18 months or so and the more I shoot it, the more I like it. The trigger is definitely better the more you shoot it. I also removed the mag safety but I didn't notice any improvement.

No issues with mine at all.

In NZ we are not allowed to carry a handgun, you can only own one with a B or C endorsement on your firearms licence, b as a member of a pistol club and c as a collector, but as a collector you are not allowed to shoot them.we unfortunately dont have a second amendment as you do in the USA.

I have one of the early SR9 and had the barrel peening problem. Ruger replaced the barrel and I have not had a single issue with it since.

Compared to my CZ 75B the SR9 has less felt recoil and for me is more accurate than the CZ.

By the way I like the trigger just the way it is.

I shot one when I was comparing guns at a range that rents. I wanted to like it, but just hated shooting it.

YMMV

Piggy-backing on what Quoheleth said, you should definitely handle the guns before purchase. I had my mind set on the SR9 when I went to purchase at a gun show. I handled all the 9mms I could find. I personally found that the handle on the SR9 was a bit too thin for my taste. I didn't think I had large hands, but it was still a bit thin. I ended up going w/ the Ruger P95, as it had the best feel in my hands of all that I held and you can't beat the price.

Good Luck
