SR9 reviews?

I would have to get rid of that silly flag up top though.

I wish someone would give me a GOOD reason why the LCI is such an issue? Can't even see the thing while shooting, and doesn't get in my way in at all.

Now, if they only get on their horses and make me a SR45c...

Hmmmmmm!!

Nice videos, TimboKhan. Congrats on your weight loss!!

Since we're doing show and tell and about hairy creatures...

I recently purchased a SR9C. I''ve only had about 100 rounds thru it, but it has yet to surprise me with something I don't like. Sights, controls, functionality, looks....it hasn't disappointed yet in any regard in my limited time owning one

Ruger pistols are part utilitarian pistol, and part an expression of what Ruger's lawyers would like a pistol to look like. Between the loaded chamber indicators, and billboard sized warnings that adorn the pistol it's an embarrassment and rather unsighty to those that prefer a clean looking firearm.

My dad picked up an SR9 this week. After we go shooting tomorrow I'll report back some some of my thoughts, and his, on it.

There are no billboards to be found on the SR9. The warning is printed in small letters on the frame.

As far as loaded chamber indicators, lots and lots of pistols have loaded chamber indicators, so maybe calling them an "embarrasment" is a little dramatic. I personally don't understand the hissy fit people throw over them, particularly since I actually do see the potential usefulness of them and can appreciate being able to see the warning from across a room. But, whatever. If you hate them, your voting with your wallet not mine so I don't really care in the long run.

By good reason do you mean in terms of functionality? If so then no I don't have one.

It's not that I don't like all LCI's. The one on my M&P9 is just fine. All it is, is a notch cut into the barrel hood. I don't like the kind that pop up. I find them goofy and unsightly. As well as an insult to my commitment to gun safety. To each his own though, so if you like them fine. But, I'd have to get rid of it.

I also don't like the trend of putting manual safeties on all models and telling people to who don't want them to just ignore it. That's a different subject entirely however.

Bottom line is the SR9 is still a great, American made gun I'd love to own.

I, too, was a bit turned off by the LCI for a little bit until I came to a simple realization. I can't see it while I'm shooting, its not in the way. Being a carry gun the Ruger either sits in the bedside safe, or in my holster, under my shirt. When exactly is it going to bother me with its looks?

That said, to each their own and its really wonderful now with so many options that each can actually find their own ideal.

I love everything about the sr9 especially the ergos and price but I'm also guilty of not caring for three LCI and warning stamped on it but it doesn't affect function one bit and i have other guns for "pretty" guns. Talking about LCI's, I really like the one on my Five-seveN. Its just a tiny silver bump the protrudes from the slide a teeny bit, just enough that you can visually see it but its very easy to feel it. Nice, functional and clean looking.

I love my SR9 and SR9c. They are great shooters. I put them up there with the rest of my pistols which are Walther PPQ, Springfield XD with combat/carry trigger and a Glock 30sf. For the price they are a bargain. I saw a SR9c in a Pawn shop yesterday, brand new for $389.00.

Shot the SR9 Today

The SR9 was my dad's first pistol, picked up last week and shot today. We don't have a rental range nearby, so I let him try a few types before we hit the gun store. Once we were there he held a few more. The Ruger won him over for best feel and natural pointability, in spite of it not being one of the guns he shot first.

Reliability was not an issue. We went through about 100 rounds today, trouble free.

Sights were stock, and easy to align well during daylight target shooting.

Feel is not Glockish. The grip is narrower, with a more classic angle to it.

For me, I would say that the fundamentals of marksmanship applied to this pistol will produce hits. For dad, it looks like he picked a good first pistol. We shot at ranges from 12-30 yards, starting out with an 8 1/2" X 11" paper with a bullseye drawn on. His first shot nicked the circle, and in the first magazine of the first pistol he's ever owned he put 12/17 rounds on the paper. After reviewing a few things he got even better. When we backed up, targets were plastic bottles and cans, and the SR9 was a lot of fun for plinking.

The LCI wasn't a hindrance to shooting whatsoever.

While more subjective, I'll share a couple aspects of the pistol I didn't warm up to:

The mechanical safety isn't something I'm used to, and was very small. I typically shoot 1911s or Glocks, so am not used to a smaller lever. If you intended to make it a carry pistol, and all other factors were great, I'm sure it could be carried safety off, or training could be used to make it a seamless part of the draw. It just felt a little unnatural. My hand also caught a minor nip from it when releasing the slide manually.

The narrow grip beat the webbing on my hand at the top. This too goes back to guns I'm more used to having wider grip circumference, and therefore more surface area to transfer recoil to the hand.

The trigger wasn't difficult to shoot; however, I didn't like the length of travel to reset (very long). Additionally, when resetting the trigger didn't feel smooth in its travel forward, which meant that at first it felt like it had reset when in fact it hadn't. I expect this will be solved with a little more lube, and more time on the range shooting the gun.

Overall I'd say the SR9 is a great value for the price. If it fits, I would definitely go for it.

Did you try flipping the backstrap? I like it flat, but virtually everyone else who shot mine liked it flipped over.

I was going to wait until tommorow until I started a seperate thread about my Ruger, but I'm a sucker for an SR9 thread.

I bought mine used about 2 years ago, and had put about 3K rounds through it. As of today, I'm 2/3 of the way done with Chris Costa's Handgun 2 class. Put 500 rounds through it yesterday, and another 700 through today, bringing the total round count upto about 4,200. Still no problems.

The gun shoots well, and I have a blister from riding the safety like you would a 1911 for over 1k rounds, but otherwise, the gun is doing great.

If you like it, get it. Don't buy one just because someone on the internet says you should, but if it fits your hands, get one.... or two.

Be advised, they do have a magazine disconect, which isn't too hard to take out, and magazines are kinda pricey.

If you have any specific questions I'll try to answer them.

Have a good one,

Chris "the Kayak-Man" Johnson

While I might have liked to experiment with it, this trip was more about my dad getting acquainted with the gun. We left it as-is this time out since the feel was what drew him to the pistol, but we'll probably try it flat next time. Good observation.

Love my sr9c. I shoot it pretty much as well as my cz75. (Somehow both of those fit my hand really well.)

My Dad bought one after Wisconsin passed their CCW law and told me how impressed he was with it. When I visited him he let me shoot it and I was impressed enough to go and buy one. I now have 500 rds through it and am more impressed than before. For $400 its one of the best buys out there.
