I've just purchased myself a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 41 mag off of an online auction that was listed NIB. I believe this to be true. I am concerned about the way the cylinder lock works on this revolver. When you open the loading gate the cylinder spins freely as is normal. When you close the gate the cylinder still spins freely until you back the hammer. I have a SBH Hunter in 44 mag also. The cylinder goes into lockup when you close the gate on this one. Is this somthing new from Ruger or is this somthing that needs to sent back to Ruger. The SBH Hunter in 41 mag is a dealer excluesive only production, could this have somthing to do with it?

Not how mine works. Mine locks up like your .44 does.

If you pull the hammer back, and it locks the cylinder, does it spin free again if the hammer is lowered forward? Or does it stay locked?

It stays locked after you let the hammer down until you open the gate again

I have a Super Blackhawk Bisley in .44 Mag. and a .357 Blackhawk, if you open the loading gate the cyl. will spin freely, close the loading gate and the cyl. locks in place.

I have a SBH Hunter Bisley in 44, BH in 357 and two Single Sixes. All of those lock when you close the gate. The 41 locks up sloid and timing is good but not until you back the hammer after closing the gate

My thoughts are that your cylinder latch is staying disengaged which could be an issue with its spring or something gumming up its movement.

SCHEMATIC

Look at the way your gate disengages the latch to see if you can see anything interfering there.

I guess to look at that there would be some disassembly required?

I had a .357 Magnum Blackhawk that did something similar to this. My STRONG advice is not to fire this weapon until this has been checked (and possibly repaired) by the factory (or the dealer).

You do not want to chance an out of time firing, it could blow the gun up or cause serious injury.

My Blackhawk had a finicky spring plunger that pushed up on the cylinder lock. Sometimes it would stick down not allowing the cylinder lock to actuate. In my case, I disassembled it, cleaned and lubricated the plunger and tested it ad nauseum. It never malfunctioned again.

yup, something is wrong. probably the wrong cylinder latch. call ruger and explain the problem. they will probably have you ship the gun to them (ask for a shipping label if they do).

i would not fire the weapon in its present condition.

Called Ruger

Talked to C/S at Ruger yesterday - talked to a nice young lady there that "didn't know and would have to ask a tech and call me back" - I'm still waiting on that call:banghead:

Cleaned and lubed it worked it a few times- works perfect now. Felt like a knucklehead for not trying that before I got distraught about it. Still haven't heard from Ruger.
