I just picked up a Ruger P89DC in good condition. It looks like it is built like a tank. Does anyone know if the weapon will take 9mm +p+ ? Are these good guns? Like i said the gun looks like it's built like a tank and can take some punishment. this will be a almost everyday carry gun, please let me know.

Everyday gun as in "I'm gonna shoot it every day" service pistol?

If so you made a good choice.

If you plan on CCW, well, it can be done, with some effort.

On to other things.

Feel free to shoot as much +p+ as you can handle. From my experience and from what I've read your not going to hurt it.

The only real problem I have with Rugers is the grip angle doesn't allow the barrel to point for me very naturally.

Welcome to THR

Umm yeah, it's a Ruger try to keep the cruise missiles to a minimum but anything less should be just fine.

It is a tank, It should feed anything that will fit that has powder behind it. Seriously though shooting +P or +P+ will accelerate wear on any gun. Your Ruger will be fine for a very long time but will last longer with standard pressure ammo.

Enjoy.

I think someone quoted a ruger pistol manual as saying that there is no known SAAMI or NATO spec round that the ruger auto pistols can't handle, as long as it is the proper caliber ofcourse. SAAMI has specs for +P+ so i say go for it.

magnumcarry,

Welcome to the forums.

I carry a P90 so don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. :neener:

By the way, you can go to the Ruger website and down load the manual or order one for free.

Rugers are among my personal favorites, especially the P89. In fact, I picked up my own new Ruger KP89 Stainless with manual safety today from Turner's Outdoorsman.

Before I made my choice, I rented and shot about half a dozen different autoloaders, including a bunch of Glocks, Berettas, Rugers, and a Kimber. Ruger P89 with aluminum frame won the competition, with the Beretta 84 being a close second.

During the selection and while waiting for my gun to be delivered (long story), I must have shot about 1,000 rounds through the rental over two months. It felt only better with time and never coughed, complained, or produced any problem of any sort. And this one was the beat-up semi-dirty rental at the range. :)

I think you (we) made a good choice. :D

There are lighter guns and there are glitzier guns. But, I don't care about feather weight or high fashion, just reliability and quality, and this baby delivers where it counts. :)

Ruger HOOWAH! I have a .40 cal P94. Great pistol! I'd love it if Ruger came out with a Compact P Series for CC. 9mm, .40 and .45 caliber options.

Magnum,

Its not my top option for carry, but I too have a P90, which I absolutely adore and mention about every post I make on THR, and I have carried it successfully. One modification that I highly recommend is that if it does not have the Hogue wrap-around grips on it, spend another 15-20 bucks and make that change. Grips are obviously a pretty personal issue, but I would say 95% of the people that have shot my P90 prefer the wrap-arounds over the flat polymer panels. Personally, those grips totally changed my mind on the P90. Prior to those grips, I was having a real problem shooting my pistol accurately. Adding those grips had the effect of forcing my hand into the proper position, in addition to being substantially "tackier" than the hard plastic panels were, and my accuracy soared. They are also just a lot more comfortable to hold onto. Anyway, thats just my 2% of a dollar, but if your expereince with your Ruger is anything like mine, I think that you will be exceptionally happy with your purchase. By the way, thats not the cheapest I have ever seen a used p89 go for (cheapest was 125.00 from a guy selling ALL of his guns. I could only afford one, so I picked up a MkII from him for 100.00 even), but that is a very, very good price, and I think you got a heck of a deal.

As much as you can afford to run through it. Not many guns are built tougher than Rugers, albeit their P-series are ugly ;)

Ugly? Heh!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :)

I find many guns that are very popular around here to be very ugly, but I won't say which for fear of hurting people's feelings.

Saying "Your gun is ugly" rates up there with "Your wife is ugly" or "Your kids are stupid". All-in-all, not very meaningful or pleasant. :neener:

$150 is a great price for a P89 in good shape.

I'm on my 3rd P-series Ruger auto (a P90TH). Like the rest of them it fits my hand well, it shoots just where I point it, always goes boom. If I ever get in a gun battle and run out of ammo, I could just beat the assailant over the head with it!

That's quite a bargain!

My only knock on the Ruger P89 (used to own one - was my first handgun in fact) is that it is way too big for what it is, and because of the aluminum frame, you don't even get the benefit of greatly reduced recoil from the size.

Hard to carry concealed - believe me, I tried!

Amazingly tough and reliable though - Ruger makes extremely solid guns.

Dorrin,

You can get the same durability in a smaller, lighter package with the P95.
