I need some opinions about Ruger M77 rifles. I have looked at them and shouldered them and I am very impressed. The problem is, I have not found much info on web searches about Ruger. I really like the Sporter Stainless w/ Brown Laminate stock. The web searches I have found show two reactions, either love it or not worth a darn. A gun store owner the way home was a Ruger man 100% and said he always has his pillar bedded. Please give me your opinions. Thanks.

The most accurate rifle I've ever owned was an old red pad M77 in 220 swift. Granted, it was an anomaly as production guns go. I've owned four M77's and loved them all.

My dad bought a M77 in 30-06 about twenty years ago for boar hunting and never fired it. He gave it to me about two years ago and the collection and passion grew. It was my first firearm. Never shot anything but paper so I don't have any hunting experiences. Hope this helps.

It's a different strokes for different folks proposition, but I think they're great rifles. The stocks fit me perfectly, whether synthetic or wood/laminate, the action is CRF, the bolt is one piece, and despite all the criticisms of the trigger, I own several of them, all recent production, and the triggers are exactly as I want them with no smithing. Like you, I like the stainless laminate models alot. I've carried the older 77's (pre-CRF) hunting, taken several deer with them, and have been as well-served as with any other design (eastern woodlot whitetails, most any servicable rifle will do). I'm thinking of trying one of the Frontiers. There's also a Whitetail Limited (Davidson's I think) that is very nice if you happen to see one (basically a tastefully embellished stainless 77 in 7mm-08).

I have an M77 in scout configuration. I like it just fine thank you. I like it well enough to have my initials engraved in the bolt. :D

i have the blued/walnut version in .270 and i love it. i've polished all the internals, and replaced all the springs. all in all the trigger job cost me 10 bucks plus shipping. it shoots less than 1" at 100 yards with cheap winchester soft points. this is my favorite rifle next to my 10/22. now if ruger would just make an affordable shotgun they would be my favorite company.

I own a M77MKII all weather in .243 and find it to be a fine and accurate rifle.

I've had and have several M77s the 2 I have now are 223 and 7.62X39 I replaced the triggers with Timney and they shoot as well as I can.
Years ago Ruger tried to blow up an M77 in 7 Rem Mag by filling the case with Bullseye powder with a 175 gr bullet after firing they had to hammer the bolt open and the primer was fused to the case pressure level was close to 200,000 psi but the bolt stayed in the rifle

I have 2 ruger all weathers, one in 223 and one in 308, they have served me well for a number of years.

I have had the wonderful oppertunity to shoot a Ruger All Weather M-77 in 7.62x39mm. That is a beautiful rifle. They have smoothe actions, and strong ejection. The triggers and accuracy are good too. The Ruger 77 action is based on a modified (for the better) Mauser 98 action, so it is definetely a strong action. I don't think you would be disappointed. :)

I am all about Ruger's as well

I have several and love them all. They are great shooters, bull strong, and about a durable as you can get. I would strongly recomend them.

the thing is, they are a nicely made, beautiful to look at rifle, and you will hear no complaints from guys who actuall hunt with them. You may hear complaints from some guys, but chances are , they are target shooters/bench shooters primarily, and are in their mind comparing it to something else that shot lights out. So don't worry about that.

Thanks for all the input. I have a few gun stores in the area that I need to price before I buy. I appreciate all the help.

I have 2: a .270 and a .22 Hornet. They're both great guns. The Hornet is one of the sweetest shooting I've ever handled.

Well, here is a pic of my older Ruger M77 Tang Safety .243 Varmint with a Pentax Whitetail Unlimited scope. It shoots best with Winchester Super X ammo. Yup, I love a gun that loves cheap ammo. The group is 9 (I said 10 earlier, but just checked my records and it was 9 shots) shots, 100 yards, 1.165 inches and a lot of practice.:D I wouldnt sell it for the world. Plus, you just gotta love a bull barrel. And people say Ruger's can't shoot. Just too bad I had 3 flyers.

My M77 red pad 220 Swift would shoot one hole at 100yds. all day with a certain type of factory ammo (can't recall what it was). Stock as the day it was born; wood stock, no bedding, lightweight barrel and factory trigger. I didn't appreciate at the time just how accurate the rifle was, and ended up trading it for something else :banghead: . I've had two match ARs, several Sakos, two Steyrs, and several dozen other assorted bolt guns (including M77s)... nothing has ever outshot that little Ruger.
