Someone just sent this to me. Never have seen it before. Pretty funny stuff.

Rules of Gunfighting
You may someday need to apply one or more of these
The absolute First Rule of a Gunfight, in Mark Moritz' brilliantly enunciated aphorism, is "Have a gun!" The rest will supplement that first rule....

Have a gun.
Preferably, have at least two guns.
Bring all of your friends who have guns.

Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.
"Why did you shoot only once? There's no additional paperwork for shooting someone twice!" -- Firearms Instructor P.O.J.D., MOS debriefing after a shooting.

Bring ammo.
The right ammo.
Lots of it.

Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

Proximity negates skill. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.)

If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun... and a friend with a long gun.

In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading and running.

Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun. Use a gun that works every time. "All skill is in vain when an Angel pisses in the flintlock of your musket."

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
"If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn't plan your mission properly."

This is the law:

· The purpose of fighting is to win.

· There is no possible victory in defense.

· The sword is more important than the shield and skill is more important than either.

· The final weapon is the brain.

· All else is supplemental.

- John Steinbeck (courtesy of Ken Campbell)
Have a plan.
Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.
Use cover or concealment as much as possible.
Flank your adversary when possible. Protect your own flank.
Don't drop your guard.
Always perform a tactical reload and then threat scan 360 degrees.
Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them.)
Decide to be aggressive enough, quickly enough.
The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.
Be polite. Be professional. But... have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
Be courteous to everyone. Friendly to no one.
Your number one option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
Do not attend a gun fight with a handgun whose caliber does not start with a "4."
Nothing handheld is a reliable stopper.
Carry the same gun in the same place all the time.

Collected and compiled by Dean Speir, formerly famous gunwriter.

IN RELATION TO:

"If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading and running."

is related to my favorite "never talk when you should be shooting."

Clint Smith

These were published some years ago as the quotes from Clint Smith.

Yeah, We've all heard/read these before. We've all heard The Four Rules before too. I love this stuff.

"The purpose of fighting is to win."
"The final weapon is the brain."

Cool

You sure cannot go wrong reinforcing the basics, thanks for the post.

I also like the rules for Roger's Rangers, especially the one about keeping your hatchet sharp.:D

From the current issue of American Handgunner rules of gunfighting. Do your best to ensure it's a shooting. A gunfight implies incoming and outgoing rounds. A shooting is a one way affair.:D

What about a 10mm?:p

"The best gunfight is the one you're not there for" :neener:

edit: rather important word was dropped

Yeager would be so proud..... That list of his has gotten floated around and attributed to so many different people over the years....it's been added to, modified and bowlderized but my favorite part is that people still include the 'number one Option for Personal Security' line and still capitalize it without ever recognizing it for what it is. :D

Do not attend a gun fight with a handgun whose caliber does not start with a "4."

So... .50AE, .500 S&W, .308, ad nauseum don't count for squat? :scrutiny:

And .17 Mach 2 or .17 HMR (which are 4.318 mm) do?

Here, stand in front of me whilst I shoot you in the head with a CZ-83.

9mm may expand, but .45 will never shrink...

But both are equally ineffective if you miss!:uhoh:

i have seen something like this posted as marine rules for a gun fight.
i prefer the navy rules for a gun fight.

1 send marines.

2 stay 1 mile off shore

3 provide gunfire support. 5" is okay 16" is best

4 drink coffee

Would you really want to try and use one of those monsters in a real gunfight? I mean, they're fun to shoot, but extremely unwieldy and the recoil isn't something I'd want to have to handle while ducking the other guy's bullets. And he's talking about pistol rounds... if you have a .308 pistol, you're a sicker man than I...

And the .17 actually starts with a 0 (ie .04 instead of .4) :D

This is typical gun-store commando Barbara Streisand. I'll bet guys stand around and repeat this like some mantra. Sure there is good advice but its a mixed bag.
"Bring ammo and lots of it"? Doesnt pass the smell test.
"Ammo is cheap, life is dear"? Tell that to the 5 innocent bystanders you hit after the BG took a shot to the stomache and went down.
My absolute favorite:

If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun... and a friend with a long gun.

When will we stop with this nonsense? :banghead:

My rules:

1. If you can walk away, walk away.

2. If you cannot walk away, run away.

3. If you cannot run away, you didn't walk away soon enough.

3. Shoot until the threat stops.

4. Call your lawyer and shut up.
